Grade 2-4-In this little jewel of a beginning chapter book, Gregory, the Chalk Box Kid (Random, 1987), returns with his friends Ivy and Richard. Here, Gregory paints pictures of Uncle Pancho's childhood in Mexico on the man's house. When the house is slated for demolition because of a new freeway, a plan is hatched to save it; when that fails, the house is moved out of the path of destruction to a new site. Uncle Pancho's hopes of being reunited with his son come to nothing, but a neighbor, Mr. Hiller, presents himself as a volunteer adopted son. Thus, disappointments are turned into victories. Even self-absorbed Uncle Max comes partly alive and shows a little interest in Gregory's artwork. Beier's pencil drawings are effective and plentiful but, given the topic, it's a shame they aren't in color. The full-color picture on the cover clearly shows the beatific expression of a child engaged in the flow of creation.

This is a good follow up book to "The Chalk Box Kid". The main character bravely works to help his uncle by using his artistic skills. If you like art, you will really like this book!

I really enjoyed this story and it made me want to paint when I finished it.

This story is about a kid named Gregory. He loves to paint and draw with his friend, Ivy.

One day, they went to see their friend, Uncle Pancho. They found out Uncle Pancho's house was going to be destroyed because people were going to put a new freeway through his property.

Gregory and Ivy were going to paint pictures on Uncle Pancho's home to save it. You will have to read this story to find out what happens next!

This story was wonderful and it made me want to do art more after I read The Paint Brush Kid.

This story is about a boy named Gregory and his friend,Ivy. They were looking for Ivy's brother, Richard. They finally found him at a great story teller's home. His name was Uncle Pancho.

For Gregory's summer vacation, he wanted to paint Uncle Pancho's house. The kids painted his house with colorful pictures from all the stories Uncle Pancho told the kids.

This was a fun story!

Redicision Therapy is a powerful, little known technique that can help patients make lasting changes in their lives. In the age of one size fits all therapies, Redicision therapy integrates the most effective techniques from CBT, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt. This book is written by the leading practitioners for the therapist that is interested I'm this practical yet effective system. Highly recommended.

This book is great if you want more out of life

If you want more out of your life, but feel trapped or that you can't succeed no matter how much you try, this book may just hold the breakthrough you've been looking for. There is no "formula" or "secret" that is revealed in the book - just a sobering and analytical look at the way societal norms and pressures can be affecting you without you even knowing it. Before you can release yourself from these "invisible chains" (the script), you must first make them visible. As the book keeps reminding you..if you want the same results as everyone else around you living a "normal life", then keep doing what you (and everyone else) is doing. If you want more, you are going to have to write your own script and find your own way to get there. This book serves as a guide to do exactly that.

If you had the choice between purchasing one of the popular financial “guru’s” books or this book Unscripted which would you choose? Not having read the authors previous book you might assume the popular “guru” book is a no brainer right? As wise ole Yoda said “Judge me by my size, do you?” For me and those who have read the author’s previous book the answer is clear – buy, read and most importantly apply the framework provided in Unscripted! This book is not only huge in size (416 pages) but more importantly it is huge in value it can provide to you and your future of breaking free of the “scripted” life. This isn’t a feel good book or “here is the 30 steps you need to do to become a millionaire and work from the beach when you want to” book. This is a book that helps you see how our life has often become one big “scripted” voluntary slavery where we work all week for two days off with a mountain of debt over our heads. Realizing our current reality is worth the price of the book alone but it goes on to showing you the framework to break free and lead an “unscripted” life. There is so many high value wisdom nuggets provided in this book but some of my favorites are:
• The Careless Whispers from you Soul
• Action faking vs action taking
• Sunday evening is the ultimate test if you are leading a scripted life – how do you feel about going back to work Monday morning?
• Don’t be a “Time Prostitute” – time is scarce money is not!

Unscripted is a book that I read slowly because it is so jammed packed with valuable wisdom that you need to process. It is a book that I will re-read many times over taking more notes and putting actionable habits that move my life from the Scripted to the Unscripted! This is the one book I will give to all my kids and close friends!

Good book, but the author is capable of much more

First, a bit about me so that I don't get jumped on for this review.

I'm a huge MJ fan and most definitely not a Fastlane hater. I've bought probably 10-15 copies of his first book (The Millionaire Fastlane: Crack the Code to Wealth and Live Rich for a Lifetime) to give to friends and family. Without trying to sound corny, it's a book that speaks to my heart, and gave my own "quiet desperation" an internal voice that I finally understood. I'm actively working on building my Fastlane vehicle and will die before I give up on it. I keep copies of TMF by my toilet and on my nightstand.

I've gotta say though, while there was a lot that I enjoyed in this book, it sometimes felt downright torturous to read. With some of the rants in it, it was almost like witnessing the after effects of a really smart person with a lot to say locking themselves in a room for a month and emotionally vomiting into a document, formatting it, and then publishing it.

On the narrative: One thought that kept returning to me as I read it was a quote by Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) in his book on failure (How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life) on writing, he says that EVERYONE should take business writing courses, and with everything they write, they should edit it as if they were getting $100 for every unnecessary word they eliminated.

Unlike a LOT of other self-help books that use a lot of extra words just to waste space, MJ is really honestly trying to get his point across, and he does, but he could do it so much more concisely. I would gladly buy a new copy of this book if it were reworked and simplified.

On the key ideas: MJ has some great thought systems, but some of the creative acronyms and the accompanying graphics are pretty complicated in the way they were presented. As I read, I kept having to go back and back again to figure out WTF I was reading and maintain context. Harder to do on the Kindle than the paperback (I have both). The way he's presenting some of his ideas sometimes seems like it would be more appropriate for a seminar or classroom where you see the idea up there on the screen and you can actively follow along as the speaker explains it. But then again, I have been called an idiot with ADHD before lol.

Bottom line, still better than most of the other self-help books out there, but not his best work, and I don't think it's a good reflection of what MJ really is capable of.

About the Author

Stephen D. Krashen is emeritus professor of education at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He is best known for his work in establishing a general theory of second language acquisition, as the cofounder of the Natural Approach, and as the inventor of sheltered subject matter teaching. He is the author of numerous books, including Three Arguments Against Whole Language and Why They Are Wrong (1999), Every Person a Reader: An Alternative to the California Task Force Report on Reading (1997), and Under Attack: The Case Against Bilingual Education (1997), all available from Heinemann.

A Survey that Supports Free Voluntary Reading

Stephen Krashen's argument in this book is no different from his hypotheses on second language learning. Students will develop full literacy if they are exposed to reading in a natural manner, free from the constraints of skill-learning that often controls classroom learning. Full literacy means that readers develop properly reading comprehension skills, acquire large amounts of vocabulary, improve spelling, and develop writing styles. The research overwhelmingly supports the fact that when students are encouraged to read on their own, and when they read what they like (what Krashen calls Free Voluntary Reading or FVR) readers will benefit exponentially as opposed to the poor effects of direct instruction in the classroom. Although this idea is already popular among educators, Krashen's efforts at documenting the research is definitely appreciated by teachers and professionals in this field.

Beside proving that FVR has a strong impact on reading, Krashen discusses in detail and supports with research, the kind of literature that students like to read; examines how helpful this literature helps students in the different types of reading skills; and discusses ways in which schools can address the problem of accessing good reading materials. Krashen does not simplify his case by putting the blame on anyone specifically. He explores the socio-economic factors that impede learners from having access to books and recommends that schools should better equip their libraries with books that kids like to read, for example: comic books, teen romances, children books, mystery and scary books. He also discusses these genre to show why these types of texts benefit learners in becoming literate. He also calls for more money to build better libraries. He also makes a case that reading improves writing skills and develops writing styles, but he admits that not much research has been done on this area. Each section is also accompanied by the effects of FVR on second language learners.

Although I agree with Krashen on the FVR, his case against direct teaching is not as compelling as his arguments for FVR. His survey on research on the effects of direct teaching is sparse, and perhaps unfair. Without questioning the enormous benefits of reading on one's own, my own teaching experience shows me how essential direct teaching is as long as it is not limited to drills and pure questioning. I do believe that direct instruction improves significantly on reading comprehension. Other texts that provide research making a case for the importance of direct instruction are William Grabe's Reading in A Second Language and I.S.P.
Nation's Teaching ESL/EFL Reading and Writing. Although these texts address second language reading, they point out to the importance that direct instruction with proper strategies improves reading comprehension skills significantly. Many other texts on reading addressing meaningful strategies to read better also suggest that direct instruction has a great effect.

However, Krashen does make one compelling argument: that stressing too much on direct instruction will never compensate for the lack of reading environment that often surrounds the young lives of many poor families. This is a caveat to ask schools to place a greater emphasis on effective reading libraries and to support programs where kids may have access to books that would be attractive to them.

In spite of the above disagreement, this book is a must for anyone who wants to enrich the reading world for learners and for novices on research, who may find this book rich in research topics.
