About the Author
Iggy Fernandez has a rich history of working with Oracle Database in many capacities. He is the author of Beginning Oracle Database 11g Administration (Apress, 2009) and teaches Oracle database administration at University of Washington Professional & Continuing Education. He was the president of the Northern California Oracle Users Group (NoCOUG), the longest running and most active Oracle users group in the world. He writes regularly for the NoCOUG Journal and has been its editor for many years. Iggy's favorite topics are database performance and SQL performance, and he regularly speaks on these topics at Oracle conferences. He has a lot of opinions but is willing to change them when confronted with fresh facts. Very Useful Beginner's Book

This book is a very good book for beginning Oracle DBAs. With this and a copy of the various manuals you should be productive in a very short time even if you have no experience on Oracle software.
Once you are rather more competent, Pro Oracle Administration from the same publisher is a worthwhile buy too, though there is some inevitable overlap (not much).
I found that as a DBA of some years standing with no Oracle experience (but a grounding in the subject of Relational Database technology and implementation) I was only "on book" a few days with this one, but I think that a raw beginner or career changer would find it very much more a central resource.
You *can* find everything in this sort of textbook in "free" manuals and on the web. The advantage in a book like this is in the presentation and the fact that it describes issues and techniques to address them that you may not even be able to frame as questions as an early learner.
And the author certainly seems to know his stuff.

Not enough information to do anything.

If you have ever taken a database course you will not find this book useful at all. Even if you know nothing about databases, this book is not enough to even get you started. I would recommend just using the tutorials on Oracle instead. If you do buy this book, plan on buying another book or using the online tutorials to supplement it. The book is very easy to read, but just doesn't provide enough information to be useful.

Good book for Oracle beginning DB Admin

I am using this book for a course on beginning DB administration. I have found it quite useful, not only for Oracle, but for admin concepts overall. It flows in a logical progression and is well written. Concepts are easy to grasp due to the author's writing style. The course progresses straight through the book, so the layout works for learning the material.
I will definitely keep the book for reference after the course.
