Amazing story

This book is so amazing. It was touching, exciting, tender, and just generally awesome. The life of a missionary is not at all what we think it is. Julene writes from the heart and reading each chapter was like an adventure for me as I never knew what she was going to do next. Even with all the differences of her childhood, I thought it was really neat that she had the same Christmas tradition of having the individual Kellogg's cereal boxes for breakfast on Christmas morning. If you want to read about what it was like to be a missionaries' kid in Africa - definitely read this book. If you want to read about a little girl growing up, read this book. I really cannot think of anyone that would not enjoy this book.

I read this book with great interest, because I was a "missionary's kid" as ...

I read this book with great interest, because I was a "missionary's kid" as well, and in the same era, though not for as many years as Julene Schroeder was, but also in a tropical country. However, I was never sent away from my parents for months (at age six!) and then years (teenagers) at a time. I had a hard time coming to terms with this. But her breezy, whimsical style of writing, her eternal spirit of optimism and her unfailing sense of humor added life and a definite desire to keep reading. Her book was peopled with characters colorfully brought to life through her endearing ability to see the best in people even when she could spot their flaws. Her father, in particular shone through as the kind of God honoring, selfless dad any girl would love to have. The book gives a unique glimpse into life in Ethiopia that tugs at one's heart.
I would love to see her write a sequel......the story of her life ...post-Ethiopia!

A beautiful story!

I have known this book was coming for a long time, and have been so anxious to see if it would live up to my expectations. In a word (or 2), it did!! I lived this life along with her, but I must have been in a fog most of the time, because my memories are not nearly as clear or detailed as hers. I tried to read it slowly and savor it, but couldn't keep myself from just racing through it. I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone who is a missionary, a child of a missionary, a spouse or grandchild or friend of a missionary kid (MK), or anyone who is even marginally interested in what life is like growing up between two cultures. The sweet, effervescent personality of the author shines through the pages, making it a real page turner. It will be required reading in my family! I am so proud to give a big 5 star rating to this book. If there were more stars, I would give them too.
