The Demon in the Freezer: A True Story, by Richard Preston

“The bard of biological weapons captures
the drama of the front lines.”
-Richard Danzig, former secretary of the navy

The first major bioterror event in the United States-the anthrax attacks in October 2001-was a clarion call for scientists who work with “hot” agents to find ways of protecting civilian populations against biological weapons. In The Demon in the Freezer, his first nonfiction book since The Hot Zone, a #1 New York Times bestseller, Richard Preston takes us into the heart of Usamriid, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland, once the headquarters of the U.S. biological weapons program and now the epicenter of national biodefense.

Peter Jahrling, the top scientist at Usamriid, a wry virologist who cut his teeth on Ebola, one of the world’s most lethal emerging viruses, has ORCON security clearance that gives him access to top secret information on bioweapons. His most urgent priority is to develop a drug that will take on smallpox-and win. Eradicated from the planet in 1979 in one of the great triumphs of modern science, the smallpox virus now resides, officially, in only two high-security freezers-at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and in Siberia, at a Russian virology institute called Vector. But the demon in the freezer has been set loose. It is almost certain that illegal stocks are in the possession of hostile states, including Iraq and North Korea. Jahrling is haunted by the thought that biologists in secret labs are using genetic engineering to create a new superpox virus, a smallpox resistant to all vaccines.

Usamriid went into a state of Delta Alert on September 11 and activated its emergency response teams when the first anthrax letters were opened in New York and Washington, D.C. Preston reports, in unprecedented detail, on the government’s response to the attacks and takes us into the ongoing FBI investigation. His story is based on interviews with top-level FBI agents and with Dr. Steven Hatfill.

Jahrling is leading a team of scientists doing controversial experiments with live smallpox virus at CDC. Preston takes us into the lab where Jahrling is reawakening smallpox and explains, with cool and devastating precision, what may be at stake if his last bold experiment fails.

Amazon.com Review
On December 9, 1979, smallpox, the most deadly human virus, ceased to exist in nature. After eradication, it was confined to freezers located in just two places on earth: the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta and the Maximum Containment Laboratory in Siberia. But these final samples were not destroyed at that time, and now secret stockpiles of smallpox surely exist. For example, since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and the subsequent end of its biological weapons program, a sizeable amount of the former Soviet Union's smallpox stockpile remains unaccounted for, leading to fears that the virus has fallen into the hands of nations or terrorist groups willing to use it as a weapon. Scarier yet, some may even be trying to develop a strain that is resistant to vaccines. This disturbing reality is the focus of this fascinating, terrifying, and important book.

A longtime contributor to The New Yorker and author of the bestseller The Hot Zone, Preston is a skillful journalist whose work flows like a science fiction thriller. Based on extensive interviews with smallpox experts, health workers, and members of the U.S. intelligence community, The Demon in the Freezer details the history and behavior of the virus and how it was eventually isolated and eradicated by the heroic individuals of the World Health Organization. Preston also explains why a battle still rages between those who want to destroy all known stocks of the virus and those who want to keep some samples alive until a cure is found. This is a bitterly contentious point between scientists. Some worry that further testing will trigger a biological arms race, while others argue that more research is necessary since there are currently too few available doses of the vaccine to deal with a major outbreak. The anthrax scare of October, 2001, which Preston also writes about in this book, has served to reinforce the present dangers of biological warfare.

As Preston eloquently states in this powerful book, this scourge, once contained, was let loose again due to human weakness: "The virus's last strategy for survival was to bewitch its host and become a source of power. We could eradicate smallpox from nature, but we could not uproot the virus from the human heart." --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
Never mind Ebola, the hemorrhagic disease that was the main subject of Preston's 1994 #1 bestseller, The Hot Zone. What we really should be worrying about, explains Preston in this terrifying, cautionary new title, is smallpox, or variola. But wasn't that eradicated? many might ask, particularly older Americans who remember painful vaccinations and the resultant scars. Officially, yes, nods Preston, who devotes the first half of the book to the valorous attempt by an army of volunteers to wipe out the virus (an attempt initially sparked by '60s icon Ram Dass and his Indian guru) via strategic vaccination; in 1977 the last case of naturally occurring smallpox was documented in Somalia, and today the variola virus exists officially in only two storage depots, in Russia and at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta (in the freezer of the title). To believe that variola is not held elsewhere, however, is nonsense, argues Preston, who delves into the possibility that several nations, including Iraq and Russia, have recently worked or are currently working with smallpox as a biological weapon. The author devotes much space to the anthrax attacks of last fall, mostly to demonstrate how easily a devastating assault with smallpox could occur here. He includes an interview with Steven Hatfill, who has received much press coverage for the FBI's investigation of him regarding those attacks; his description of meeting Hatfill, hallmarked by a quick character sketch ("He was a vital, engaging man, with a sharp mind and a sense of humor.... He was heavy-set but looked fit, and he had dark blue eyes") is emblematic of what makes this New Yorker regular's writing so gripping. Preston humanizes his science reportage by focusing on individuals-scientists, patients, physicians, government figures. That, and a flair for teasing out without overstatement the drama in his inherently compelling topics, plus a prose style that's simple and forceful, make this book as exciting as the best thrillers, yet scarier by far, for Preston's pages deal with clear, present and very real dangers.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This book about smallpox begins with the anthrax attacks of October, 2001, and, by the end of this thriller, Preston has chillingly linked the two topics. All of the anthrax evidence from the Hart Senate Office Building was taken to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) in Fort Detrick, MD, and it is here that the author first brings smallpox into consideration by introducing Peter Jahrling, the organization's senior scientist. He believes that smallpox, which has killed more people than any other infectious disease, is the greatest biological threat facing humanity. Preston relates the history of smallpox from 1000 B.C. to the outbreaks in the 1970s. He goes into great detail about the World Health Organization's campaign to eradicate it and the lost opportunity to destroy it forever. His final chapter introduces the idea of genetically modified smallpox that might be resistant not only to vaccines, but also to acquired immunity. The author draws readers into his narrative by humanizing his facts; researchers, WHO workers, and smallpox victims relay parts of this vivid and alarming story. Fans of Preston's The Hot Zone (Anchor, 1995) will definitely want to read this work for that subtle blend of information and horror that he is so adept at providing.

True Masters are Minimalists
By California Dreaming
I usually like reading true-crime books, and I generally don't seek out books written by any particular author; I just want a good read about a great story that I've heard about. But there is one exception: Jack Olsen. He may no longer be with us, but his books surely live on, and I'm always taking a peek to see if another one of his works has recently become available in the Kindle format. Some people have even called him "An American Treasure," and I don't have any problem with that statement.

And Richard Preston is surely right up there as well. This is my second read from him, the first being, "The Hot Zone," and I was mesmerized while reading that, just like I was mesmerized while reading "The Demon in the Freezer." With both of these gentlemen though, I will say that, if you read any of their works, you may have trouble sleeping at night. After all, Mr. Olsen liked to write about serial killers while Mr. Preston likes to write about viruses. And it's hard to say which one of these real-life scourges might kill you first.

Most authors use flowery language to get their points across, while neither of these gentlemen ever seem to add one unnecessary word. It's as if they write a chapter, backtrack, and then remove any words that are unneeded. It is the case that, when telling a story, words often do just get in the way; natural language is somewhat flawed, after all. But you wouldn't know it while reading the works from these two masters.

I do like how Mr. Preston describes a new character for the first time in a chapter. He must have a template, and he must follow that template religiously. You might read something like, "John Smith is a doctor at John Hopkins. He has gray hair, parted in the middle, with a slight frown on his face." Etc. I like it. Why reinvent the wheel, after all? But Mr. Preston's writings are far from just workmanlike; when he gets into the meat of a subject, you know that the potatoes are soon coming. However, you just hope that you'll be able to keep down a meal after reading an unsavory description of how some poor soul dies from, say, smallpox.

Keeping in the spirit of both writers, I'll keep this review short and sweet. But I will add the following: for fans of Richard Preston, I highly encourage you to try a book or two from Jack Olsen as well. You surely won't be disappointed, either way.

good storytelling of an important and scary topic.
By T.willy
This is a terrific book which vividly describes the often secretive or unheralded world of the dedicated international teams who research and control or eradicate dangerous diseases or bioterrorism agents. It should be required reading for all high school and college students to give them historical and current day perspectives on the almost unimaginable danger these agents possess. It may help temper a few of our "outrages" over the "failure" to find Saddam's "weapons of mass destruction," or current activism which welcomes potentially "under vetted" refugees or travelers from politically dangerous countries or regions of the world. One traveler carrying a bioweapon disease or agent into an unprepared region can wreak massive havoc on the populations and set off a rapidly spreading firestorm of illness, suffering, and death.
Thank you for the book, Mr. Preston!

Scary, true and still relevant
By Ashutosh S. Jogalekar
Like most kids of my generation I had read Preston's scary Ebola book, "The Hot Zone", but I had not gotten around to reading his book on smallpox. The volume benefits from Preston's masterly and riveting narrative-investigative style that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. His writing is a case study in understanding how even mundane observations and details about people and events can enrich good non-fiction writing.

Smallpox does not appear as dangerous as Ebola, but in some sense it's even more so because of its relatively slow and easy spread. As in the Hot Zone, some of the best accounts of the book feature high-strung and courageous scientists working in Level 4 hazardous areas, slicing up smallpox-ridden monkeys and looking at anthrax spores. The book focuses on the anthrax mailings after 9/11, on the amazingly successful smallpox eradication program which eradicated the disease in 1975 and the smallpox biowarfare program in the former Soviet Union.

The latter is probably the scariest part of the book. The Soviet Union kept on secretly working on smallpox even after the US and other countries dismantled their own programs in the 1970s. Something like 20 tons of smallpox have gone missing since the end of the Cold War and, encouraged by the eradication of the efforts, the WHO and other organizations have destroyed almost their entire stocks of smallpox vaccine. In addition there's no tested drug for smallpox. Combined with the ability to create engineered versions of the virus that are immune to vaccines, these three facts might contribute to a disaster of catastrophic proportions surpassing AIDS (at its peak smallpox was killing about 6 million people every year).

Fortunately there's a select few highly dedicated scientists and doctors who are trying to create new vaccines, but government regulations largely prevent them from working on the virus. As of now there are only two recognized places in the world where smallpox exists - the CDC in Atlanta and the Moscow Institute in Russia - but almost nobody thinks that these are the only two places. Hopefully we won't have to find out about the existence of other sources the hard way.

No other contemporary songwriter has created a body of work of such consistent quality, and such singular emotional and intellectual brilliance, as Leonard Cohen. His smoke-black vocal style navigates the most sophisticated and arresting of melodies in songs infused with romance, innuendo, and humor. Arriving at the 60s pop-music party fashionably late, Cohen released his debut albumSongs of Leonard Cohenin 1967. At 33 years of age, he was the adult in the room, a room brimming, then as now, with literary pretension and artistic self-importance. But Cohen, already established as a respected poet and novelist, was the real deal. In the decades since, he has battled with drugs, love, and bankruptcy; become a Buddhist monk while simultaneously reaffirming his Jewish faith; and recorded 11 more albums of unfailingly affecting beauty. Beginning with Cohen the young poet and author in his home town of Montreal and ending with his 2012 releaseOld Ideasand recent acclaimed live performances, Everybody Knows honors Leonard Cohens 80th birthday by celebrating his genius and tracing his rise to stardom through 200 photographs and the thoughts, memories, and reflections of those who have both worked with and been inspired by him.

About the Author

Michael Milton likes books. Before his first day of high school wrestling, he checked out a stack of books on technique from the library and practiced on his not-terribly-enthusiastic little sister. Then he spent the first few minutes of tryouts kicking the butts of other newbies, until the experienced wrestlers realized how much fun it would be to kick his. Within a few months, he became a decent wrestler, but he always stayed a bit ahead of the other newbies because of those books.

His life has consisted of gleefully going through that process over and over again in completely unrelated fields. Naturally, he's a Head First fanatic.

Until recently Michael spent most of time looking at databases to help nonprofit organizations figure out how to make more money. He has a degree in philosophy from New College of Florida and one in religious ethics from Yale University. When he's not in the library or the bookstore, you can find him in-line skating, taking pictures, and brewing beer.

Combines mathematics, tools, and tactics
By calvinnme
This book is for professionals that must analyze data in their daily work. First off, if you are unfamiliar with the approach of the "Head First" series of books by O'Reilly, the approach was and is revolutionary in the field of technical writing. The authors of this series know that page after page of terse text will not easily penetrate the brain of the working professional who needs help rather quickly. Traditional textbook models work best on students in a traditional classroom setting who can slowly absorb material over a period of several months with the help of bi-weekly classroom sessions with a professor. The working professional does not have this luxury of time or of personal tutoring.

Thus the authors both penetrate your brain and hold your interest by serving information up in unusual ways - odd pictures and illustrations, Q&A sessions, repeating the same material in different ways, and interesting case studies in which you are asked at every step to give your input. They'll even lead you down the the wrong path every now and then so that you remember the right one all the better.

As for the subject matter, this is not a book on statistics and how to solve problems in statistics. Instead, it is how you use various statistical models and tools and visualization to analyze often confusing corporate data and come up with recommendations based on that data. Some mathematical methods will be presented as they are necessary to solving the underlying problems - optimization, hypothesis testing, bayesian statistics, subjective probabilities, heuristics, and histograms - these are all mentioned and even have their own chapters. However, this book is also about tools - R and the analysis tools of Excel specifically. In the appendix, this book even shows you how to install R.

However, I don't believe that you could get away with knowing nothing of statistics and really get the most out of this book. If you do happen to have the luxury of a little time I suggest the following. Read the excellent Head First Statistics as a tutorial, and then use the problems in Schaum's Outline of Statistics (Schaum's Outline Series) to test your knowledge. Then you should be more than ready for this book.

The author has a chapter entitled "leftovers" that tells you what this book does not cover. I include that here so that you don't waste your time if this is what you are looking for:

1 Everything else in statistics
2 Excel skills - (book assumes previous experience)
3 Edward Tufte and his principles of visualization
4 PivotTables
5 Nonlinear and multiple regression
7 Null-alternative hypothesis testing
8 Randomness
9 Google Docs

I highly recommend this book for the right audience with the right experience level.

Slice and dice data like a Ninja
By Bill Mietelski
First, a disclaimer: as one of the technical reviewers for the book, I might be a little biased. Having said that, I'm willing to bet my copy of Head First Data Analysis that this won't be the last 5-star review you'll find here :-)

By my count this is the 20th book in the Head First series, so by now most Amazon customers know the story behind the Head First format, style, and pedagogy. These aren't your typical technical books, so if this is the first Head First book you're considering, you owe it to yourself to get a sneak preview first. I think you'll be in for a treat.

The Amazon Reader does have the first six pages of Chapter 1, which will give you some idea, but I'd recommend going to Head First Labs where you can download and read the entire 2nd chapter. You can also grab the full Table Of Contents in PDF format, which I believe is a little easier on the eyes than the TOC in the Amazon Reader.

The book is written for folks without hardcore data analysis experience who are looking for an introduction to analyzing data to make better decisions. You won't need a background in statistics, engineering, or computer science. While some data analysis books assume you're a math geek, Michael Milton does not.

And while many "Data Analysis" books pretty much revolve around Excel's data analysis functions (Analysis ToolPak, Solver, etc), this book is more about how you work with data, not about how you use a particular software tool. While you do use spreadsheets and a statistical computing software package called "R", the focus is on using the tools between your ears to become a better data analyst.

These days almost everyone needs to deal with and interpret data. Those that become successful know how to make sense of it all. This book will help you think about, process, and present your data so you can draw reliable conclusions to real-life questions.

Too much fluff
By Gregory A. Stobbs
While some of the Head First series have been quite helpful, this one has way too much fluff, making it tedious to find the important content. By way of example, the entire page 97 is devoted to "Profits fell through the floor" with a picture of a sad person, a picture of a pile of rubber ducks, a sample letter expressing a complaint, and the conclusion that "this is pretty bad news." Page 97 lies in the middle of the "optimization" chapter, but you don't get to the punch line on what to do about the "pretty bad news" until page 108. The pace of the book is simply too slow--which I attribute to an overuse of the Head First style, a style supposedly "designed for the way your brain works." My brain would have been happier if the editors had picked up the pace.

Di Fiore's Atlas of Histology With Functional Correlations, by Victor P., Phd Eroschenko

Recommended in the Brandon/Hill selected list of print books and journals for the small medical library - April 2001 & 2003 The Ninth Edition of this classic histology atlas correlates tissue structure to function. Through illustration and four-colour photomicrographs it juxtaposes idealized views with real life ones. With 59 high-quality photomicrographs and three-dimensional, computer-generated overview art, this book magnifies the minutia of organ and tissue structure to show which microscopic structures perform what functions and how said functions work. The functional correlations sections correlate with and directly relate to specific illustrations of tissues as organs. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their respective systems. Part two addresses organs in similar fashion. Lecturers - Click here to order a FREE Review Copy of this title !.

nice find
By Clydesdale
The biology class I'm taking had this as a required textbook. The bookstore did not order any of them so I searched Amazon to find a good price. The book I received was not only what I needed but was in better condition than I anticipated. I must admit, I looked not only for price but for a store in my home state so it would get here faster. This vender came through getting it to me 4 days prior to what the projected delivery date would be. Highly recommend buying from this source.

Mediocre
By A. Shalman
Hello, Im a Med student and became a Histology lover during my course. I own several Histo books and I have to say that I have read them all. So I have used this Atlas to "supplement" my Ross and my Wheater's and my 2-3 others, just for fun.
Regarding to this Atlas, and this is JUST an Atlas, I have to say that in my humble opinion it doesn't worth the buy if you intend to reach a somewhat decent level in this course. I dont want to discourage anyone from buying it, after all I have also bought it, but not everyone is willing to spend money on UNNEEDED books. I have seen a lot of people using it, and may be it did saved some "lives" but there are lots of better Histo books out there guys. The picture quality is moderate, the text is too much simplified (and I am not a native English speaker!)If you want a concise book my pick would be Wheater's, and if you want a thorough one, I would choose the Ross. For an Atlas I would go for the "Color Atlas of Histology" by Gartner. And generally speaking, if you go JUST for Ross, you will not need any other book.
I give this book a generous mark of three stars and add one if I heart someones feelings and hope that it was helpfull.

Outstanding atlas for histology students
By A Customer
I'm a med student and found this study guide just awesome. The pictures make histology much easier to learn and helped me of course with my histology lab. For class exams, I used the following which was also awesome: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi, which is also on amazon. This last study guide was quite thorough with the type of questions to look out for on my medical histology exams. It proved very valuable since it helped me get very good grades. Both books are very valuable and should help any med student.

Its amazing in a time where everyone is beginning to grasp the need for customizing a home to the landscape while incorporating all of the natural principals of sustainable living along with newly devised principals, one only needs to look back to Frank Lloyd Wright's "The Natural House" to find the elements he envisioned for not only the elite custom homes, but the simple urban homes as well. Imperceptible Harms and Benefits (Library of Ethics and Applied Philosophy)From Springer

The papers collected here represent the most recent work on a much neglected problem in practical reasoning. It is the problem of imperceptible harms and benefits. It is perhaps better to characterize the problem as a collection of puzzles or paradoxes, since those who deny the existence (or possibility) of imperceptible decrements (or increments) face problems no less perplexing than those who affinn their existence. The puzzles and paradoxes combine very practical and pressing worries about our obligations to relieve starvation, mitigate suffering and conserve resources, with deep metaethical worries about the nature of practical rationality. I use these brief introductory pages to familiarize the reader with the basic set of problems examined in this collection. Most of us think that an action cannot be wrong if its effects are entirely and always imperceptible. Jonathan Glover's fanciful example of the 100 armed bandits and the 100 Wlarmed tribesman clearly illustrates a deep worry with such moral reasoning.

"No other introduction to lexicography outshines the limpid style of Dictionaries or the rich balance of its contents." Journal of the Dictionary Society of America

"Here is a new thing under the sun: a virtually exhaustive treatment of lexicography...should be required reading for all lexicographers and can be heartily recommended to everyone else who cares to know what dictionaries are like and how to use them to best advantage." Fascinating Information
By Ohioan
This is a book full of fascinating information about how dictionaries are conceived of and made: how the information is collected and what the guiding principles of each publisher are. Reading this book and learning about how publishers "count" the words that are supposedly in their dictionaries has changed my entire outlook on how to buy a dictionary. Thanks to this book I've also become very aware of "latent words." The book is long, but never dull. If you're interested in words, word origins, and how dictionaries are compiled, this book will entertain and educate you.

Qualified Five Stars
By Randy Given
This deserves a qualified five star rating. Qualified, in the sense that you need to have some interest in lexicography and history. Not a degree, mind you, but more than a distant interest. At times, it does get a little long-winded, but stay with it. Some interesting stories and good insight into a world that we often don't see, but we use its results quite frequently. Fairly easy to read, no more difficult than high school reading materials (probably easier than that). Give it a try, at least start and browse.

Engaging, entertaining and of course informative
By I. Holder
Second Editon review.

Highly unlikely to climb the best-sellers list, more's the pity, this is a most engaging, entertaining and of course informative read about how dictionaries are created. But it covers much more than that: within Sidney Landau has written a history of dictionaries, how dictionaries are used, considerations when creating a dictionary, considerations when printing a dictionary, how dictionaries are viewed in society [bigger is always better seems to be the unfortunate view] and much, much more.

While perhaps in regard to the technology a bit out of date [2001 -- technology has moved ahead in leaps and bounds; though Landau does cover how computers both help and hinder] -- perhaps a call to write a new edition please Sidney? -- the principles seem timeless. I knew a dictionary was a complicated endeavour, but until I read this I did not know just how complicated. And despite this, or perhaps because of their complexity, as well as Landau's enthusiasm and experience, I wish I could go and be part of a team working on one now.

I'd also add Sidney Landau's humour kept me amused througout; while of course meaning no disrepect to surgeons, and I am sure Landau thought the same, this quote, coming in a section dealing with style manuals and how to make them readable and suitable for different people, gives one example of a quote that had me laughing:
One must therefore prepare a simplified version of the style manual for contributors ... The same person who can separate and suture microscopic blood vessels of the eye with perfect assurance falls into a state of mental collapse when instructed in the proper use of parentheses.
