This is fantastic! I loved how he was telling the story of the Arab Spring through his own incredible rise. This man started a show in his laundry room that ended up becoming the biggest show in Egyptian history and when he spoke out about his government, he felt threatened and fled the country. We should all read this and be inspired to speak up when we feel it necessary!

In 1720, Newton invested his money in the South Sea bubble and lost �20000, a lot of money in those days [1].

So, physicists do not always do it better in financial markets.

Having said that, let us now go on and consider the merits and limits of this book by Joseph McCauley.

The book is divided into nine chapters. Chapters 1, 3, 8 and 9 cover material from epistemology (ch. 1), probability theory (ch. 3), fluid dynamics (ch. 8), and the theory of computation (ch. 9). Chapters 2, 4, 5,6 and 7 are mainly devoted to economics and finance. Namely, chapter 2 critically reviews the general theory of equilibrium, chapter 4 is on the dynamics of markets, chapter 5 and 6 present portfolio selection theory and

option pricing, respectively, and, finally, chapter 7 is a criticism of thermodynamic analogies in finance.

The range of interests of the author is overwhelming and this book is the first attempt to put together many concepts taken from various disciplines in a coordinate view. I am a fan of this method and I much appreciate the effort of the author. However, this is also a limit, as the reader looking for recipes to price options or to select a suitable portfolio will be somehow disappointed. In the very same way, those looking for a

rational criticism of neo-classical assumptions in economics are likely to read the chapters on option pricing without great passion.

In a short review, it is impossible to take into account all the aspects of McCauley's book.

I will just discuss one: equilibrium in economics. But, before that, let me underline that this is the first book in Econophysics where everything in finance is done by explicitly formulating and calculating Green functions. Second, the author presents the European option price predictions in a closed algebraic form and, third, Gaussian returns play no role in the predictions fully based on the empirical distribution.

The author presents a nice criticism of the concept of equilibrium in economics which, in itself, is worth

buying and reading the book. The arguments are scattered throughout the book, as the author is interested

in discussing the behaviour of financial market. For economics and finance, the author provides convincing evidence that the only legitimate form of equilibrium is vanishing excess demand. But price fluctuations in actual financial markets cannot be effectively explained by a sequence of different economic equilibria determined by varying exogenous factors. Then, the only possibility is that excess demand is considered as a stochastic process leading to diffusive models for price (or return) dynamics. Thus, the use of the Green-function formalism in Finance is a natural and logical choice.

McCauley's discussion on equilibrium would have been helped by reference to Kaldor's 1972 paper on the irrelevance of equilibrium economics [2]. Kaldor's point of view coincides with the one of McCauley when he argues that ultimately theories must be confronted with the real world. In discussing the difference between an axiomatic theorem and a scientific theory, Kaldor quotes Einstein: > [3]

Also in this book, as in many contemporary books, there are various misprints and the constant reference to wrong equation numbers is disturbing.

I think that this book can be read with profit both by physicists interested in complex systems and by economists interested in the principles of their discipline. Economists can always refer to Newton's example mentioned above, when they read in the book about the success of physicists in finance.

A new kind of finance

Neo-classical economic theory is not a good approximation of real markets, as many have argued in the past and more insistently in the last decade. Very rarely, on the other hand, criticisms are so accurately motivated as in this book. In fact the author uncovers both theoretical and empirical inconsistencies of standard economics tex-books, showing the reader a path towards a re-foundation of finance theory. A new model of option pricing, based on the empirical distribution of returns, is proposed therein. After a brief introduction to the mathematics involved, the book presents, for each subject treated, the standard economic approach and a different point of view. It then falsifies the former and illustrates the latter with clear examples: an effective pedagogical procedure.

In the first part the main ideas of the dominant microeconomic theory, which assumes stable global equilibrium, are reviewed critically. Physicists learn that the quest for a global solution of nonlinear systems of equations is very rarely successful. Nevertheless it is widely believed that global deregulation leads to an efficient market, the mythical stable optimum theorized by neo-classical economics. Standard finance theory is introduced in the core of the book. The author's precise criticisms hit the often misused notion of equilibrium and the Modigliani-Miller theorem. This states that a firm's market price is independent from its debt-to-equity ratio, whereas Enron' s collapse seems to provide evidence of the opposite. Special attention is devoted to portfolio selection theories and to the Black-Scholes equation for pricing options in particular. Then the author illustrates his empirically based theory of market dynamics, which is a markovian stochastic process where the diffusion coefficient is not constant. Options can be priced accordingly, using the empirical distribution of returns -instead of the Gaussian one. The last part of the book discusses other applications of the physics of complex systems to finance. The author argues that thermodynamic analogies fail in economics, describing the example of a hedging strategy. Scaling and correlations are also treated in this part, before a brief review of the main conclusions drawn by various physicists who analyzed financial data.

The author guides readers of any level through the chapters they could be interested in and provides them with an accurate bibliography. But this book is not only a useful contribution to econophysics and finance theory. Especially after American elections, neo-libaral policies are going to receive a strong support from the Bush administration. McCauley demonstrates that their claims are not at all supported by empirical evidence nor by scientific rigor. amazon

Lot of criticism, lack substance

In spite of its title, Dynamics of markets by McCauley is more about a criticism for the traditional point of view of economics rather than a textbook showing original ideas. Moreover the book is ambitious about is scope and depth, but proves to fall short on both. Altough the criticism of the author about economics seems logical and the arguments seems sound there is no alternative theory presented on the book. The passion of the author about the subject overcomes the objectivity of the arguments, rendering the book interesting as an alternative reading but not as a good textbook an a subject that by its nature is extremely difficult.

As reading on eh book progress it becomes clear that the author despises and considers wrong every idea and theory antagonic to his point of view. Moreover the criticism against many different theories becomes repetitive, as is a variation of the author's argument about the wrongness of economic equilibrius. The book keeps claiming in every chapter that numerous models that are being currently used by world banks, tradespeople and stock brokers among other are utterly wrong, without giving more that a couple of sentences to call judgement on them.

The book is also full of typografical error which makes extremely difficult to follow and reproduce any derivation, which is essential in order to learn a technical subject. What is worse, there are passages of the text that proves the blatant ignorance of author have on some key aspects of the theory of mathematical finance, such as the technical details of arbitrage pricing and martingales.

Its literary style is not a good either, as many chapter seems to be a semi-random collection of related ideas, without greater structure. This is yet another factor working again the manuscript as a textbook.

I do not recommed this book for anyone seriously interested to the subject, except maybe for the valuable material in chapter 2 on the criticism of the notions of equilibrium. Beyond that, avoid the material as the poor style, typografical errors and poor structure only creates confusion instead of transmiting information.

Nothing new, save your money

I found this book intensely irritating. It's 160 pages long and most of that is filler, pretty photos, pages with three short paragraphs spaced well apart. The actual content could easily be included in a book of half the length and without that infuriating spiral binder (way too big and bulky). It's basically very expensive for what it is.

The content is ridiculously optimistic. Apparently you can sort out your clothes closet in two hours flat. If that were really the case, nobody would ever have a messy closet. My clothes closet is not very big and is organized and tidy, but I still need at least one day to sort it out twice a year, because you have to try things on to see how they look when deciding whether to keep or toss.

Some of the advice is so ludicrous, it had me howling with laughter. Apparently you can have a really tiny handbag because you only need to carry seven essentials (wallet, calendar or electronic organizer, notebook, pen, comb, tissue and keys). I only ever buy small handbags and I travel light, but I do not view my asthma inhaler, cell phone or sunglasses as frivolities. Many women would be horrified at the thought of not carrying any make up whatsoever!

If you've read any other decluttering book, you don't need this one.

This book is TERRIFIC! Not only is it well laid out (pictures, tabs, everything that makes this book)the information contained in it is good, makes sense, and easy to follow! I also got the Home Organizing Book from the same author. Great book as well. It motivates you to get off your behind and get your life in order. GET THIS BOOK.

Excellent conclusion to an addictive series

Zero hour is the long-awaited conclusion to the Gypsy Brothers' series. Each book is like a roller coaster ride on crack- slap to the face pacing that leaves the reader with whiplash. Once hooked on episode one, be prepared to binge-read the series in its entirety, leaving you sleepless and a bit ornery when interrupted.

At the end of One Love, I felt many emotions: satisfaction, heartbreak, and relief I was finally getting off the ride, hoping to get my equilibrium back. I wanted to know more about our broken Juliette- the girl was consumed by her own vengeance, making her just as bad, if not worse, than her victimizers. I felt the story had met its conclusion, but I was interested in whether it was possible for Juliette to truly have an HEA with all the taint on her soul. So I was equally shocked and intrigued when Zero Hour was announced- most readers were expecting a fluffy happy ending.

But Lili St. Germain is not fluffy.

Zero Hour was dark and gritty, wading through all the haunting pain, guilt, and resentment by the narrators. But what else could you expect after seven brutal installments?

A review is either to sell a reader on a book, or to dissuade them from buying. But if you've already read the seven previous installments, I don't think anything I have to say will do either. Just realize, don't start the book unless you have time to finish it in one sitting, as you'll be hard-pressed to put it down.

I have followed Jase and Julz throughout the whole Gypsy Brothers series, so I was excited to hear about and then receive an ARC of their epilogue.
Jason and Juliette are in hiding from Julian Dornan and the rest of the Gypsy Brothers and also from The Cartel, with Luis, Elliott and his ex Amy and their daughter, while the DEA investigates and tries to uncover more evidence to be able to make arrests. If they manage to stay alive until this can happen, if they testify against the Gypsy Brothers and the Cartel, they will get immunity from everything they have previously done.
They are all tired of always having to be on their toes, away from home and on tenderhooks. Waiting for the next call, to again say they have to move as their enemies are moving in.
On top of this, Jason and Juliette are struggling individually and as a couple. Their minds constantly wandering to dark places. Secrets from their pasts that could threaten to completely tear them apart. Everything going around in their minds is ugly. They each feel the other is pulling away and are in despair as to how to fix it.
When they get yet another call to say the Cartel has arrived in Miami and they need to move, the group decide to take things into their own hands. They want their lives back. They decide to go home and fight.
But are this group of friends strong enough to take on both the Gypsy Brothers and the Cartel? Can Jase and Julz overcome the darkness that has taken over their minds? Or are these two battles simply too big to take on?
So wow….. I didn’t expect so much from this epilogue. I’m used to reading all hearts, flowers and happiness in epilogues, Zero Hour however, was dark and raw and edgy and I LOVED IT!! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, knawing away at your fingernails, anxious for what is going to come next.
The emotions were so deep throughout, that it pulled me in. I was so worried for Jason and Juliette, I felt like I was right there with them. It was sad to read of their pain, regrets and guilt.

“He’s dead….. he’s dead but your the one that’s gone.”

Dornan may of been dead, but he was still very much in both of their lives, somehow still causing trouble. Jase and Julz have been through so much, both together and apart, will they ever get a break.
Zero Hour is written mainly from Jason and Juliette’s point of view, with the odd chapter written from Elliott. The length is just perfect enough to be descriptive and full to the brim with action without being dragged out.
This is an intense, fast paced and emotional conclusion to Jason and Juliette’s story. One of the best epilogue’s to a story I have read so far!!

Finding Safty and Peace

This was a really great end to an amazing series. In the last book, Juliette and Jason finally got their revenge and Dornan, his father Elliot, and all Jason's brothers are finally dead. But their story wasn't over and they didn't just walk into the sunset. Juliette, Jase, and Elliot are all still running from the remaining Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club and the Il Sange Cartel. Elliot's younger brother is now head of the Cartel. They can't stay in one place for too long and Elliot is trying to protect his daughter and her mother. No one is happy and no one is safe. Juliette cries all the time and Jase has so much anger and hurt built up in him. Jase feels like a monster because of the things Dornan used to do to him and how he is now and what turns him on. He loves Julz with all of his heart but he's hurt and angry about the baby. He's scared about sharing with her what happened to him and what he's become.

Definitely worth reading and a wonderful end to this series.

Eve is always a lot of fun

It was fun to read. Eve is one of my favorite characters, possibly my favorite of the series. I appreciate the shades of gray that she and Kristof Nast bring in. The humor is strong in this installment. I particularly enjoyed the conversation in which Kristof explained his role of the hero's girlfriend.

This story is also meant to be important to Eve's character development, in which she really accepts her role as an angel, despite the way she is frequently jerked around by the Fates.

It would've been nice to see Trsiel. But this was just a novella, and it's worth reading if you're a fan of the series. If you're new to it, I wouldn't personally start here. I'd start at the beginning, with Bitten. Enjoy.

A Side Trip in the Women of the Otherworld series

This novella is for fans of Armstrong's work. We get a glimpse into Eve Levine's world as we see her as a part-time angel and part-time ghost. She is getting jerked around by the Fates and wants to quit her job but is called in to find out why djinn are breaking their contracts with mortals. We also get brief glimpses of Kristoff, Jeremy and Jaime. This fills in a couple of blanks for regular readers of Armstrong's books.

Pretty darn great for a short story!

It's pretty darn great for a short story! This fantastic novella is the prequel to the K-9 Rescue series by author D.D. Ayres. To tell you the truth, I am already hooked on this series. So when the chance came along to grab this book I jumped on it right away. I am glad that I did because it was a good read that pulled me in right away and it didn't let go until the end.

This thrilling story began with a betrayal. I don't usually like it when that happens, and it's hard for me to connect and get over it when it does. All in all though, the author did a great job with Brad's character. I was okay with everything after he became so determined to help Georgie. Now, Georgie was one of those heroines that I like to read about. She was a strong one. She stayed calm and faced the situation and did something about it. They had great chemistry together, but not really a lot of hot love scenes. There just wasn't time for that because of the length of the story and all that was going on. So I think their story should've been told with a full length novel. Just so I could've had more of them, you see. Lol :))

The suspense here was good. It kept me on edge trying to figure out the identity of Georgie's stalker / secret admirer. I will say that I liked the big twist the author threw in, though I kind of had it figured out by then.

So I really enjoyed the book. The writing was good, the plot was strong and made sense. Everything flowed perfectly so that it was easy to read. I liked the characters, the dog, the romance and the suspense. The angst was extra good because of how the relationship began. That was the part that I ended up really loving. I loved the big ending too. I only wished for more time with Brad and Georgie so I could watch their relationship grow. Maybe they will pop up in another book. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I can honestly say that I never put the book down once I started reading it. I'm definitely up for the next book in the K-9 Rescue series and hoping to see a full length novel next time. Love this author and so glad that I discovered this great series.

Georgiana Flynn never dates her customers. She is a photographer who is shooting a calendar as a favor to her friend. When a sexy guy and his K9 partner are next she finds herself breaking her own rules.

Too bad the guy disappears the next day. But, when her life is in danger, special FBI agent Brad Lawson is back in the picture and he'll do anything in his power to protect her from a possible terrorist.

This is a novella in the K-9 Rescue series. It's short and sweet. A book you can read in just a few hours. The action and the romance were a good combination.
I love books with pets and Zander was too cute not to love.

I'm adding the next one to my TBR.

This is the first book I read by this author, can't wait to read more both in this series and others by her. Very intriguing story, full of what the hell moments and Brad or what ever name he uses..lol..is sexy as hell , especially his butt and Zander is pretty awesome himself, love books with poochies in them and Zander kicks butt. Great twists and turns and scorching kisses, wow. This books got it all..great characters, love Georgie and Brad together, they just click, Georgie is hot stuff too...great story...4.5 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

BOOK DESCRIPTION Bible-based Christianity claims to be a revelation from God, in fact it claims to comprise the most comprehensive collection of truths concerning the nature and purposes of God, and the nature and destiny of mankind that has ever been revealed. It claims that this revelation was made to mankind by Divinely Inspired, and therefore, utterly inerrant writings that have been transmitted to us through what is popularly known as The New Testament. However, this collection of documents rests upon the previously existing collection of documents which comprise the Hebrew Canon, referred to by Christians as the Old Testament, and therefore is itself acutely vulnerable to any assault made upon the Hebrew Canon, or Old Testament. The very foundation of the Hebrew Canon, in terms of the claimed sequence of writing, historical events narrated, and theological importance, is the Torah, or Pentateuch, or Five-Books-Of-Moses; namely, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. It is not surprising then, that while there is continuing debate about the so-called Synoptic Problem, the authorship and placement of the Pastoral Epistles, the provenance of the Book of Daniel, the authorship of the Book of Isaiah, and many of the Psalms, it is the Pentateuch that has been the target of the most unremitting assaults of sceptics and Critics down the years, and the Book of Genesis has suffered the most brutal of these attacks. It is these assaults upon the Pentateuch that form the subject of this book. This book was thoroughly researched and well written. That Mr. Phalan had to go to a small independent publisher is evidence of the academic that plagues our current world! Mr. Phelan documented his sources as every scholarly work should. I plan on buying multiple copies to give to friends and colleagues.

A Great Defense of the Origin and Inspiration of the Torah

This book takes on the higher critics, demolishing their case that the origins of the first five books of the Bible are late in Israel's history. He takes on each viewpoint of the Pentateuch's origin, and shows why the only possible true option is the one believed traditionally by the Jews. He shows how the Pentatuach developed, based on the information in the books themselves, and based on the patterns and customs in ancient writing. His section on patterns in the Bible is interesting, although the "Bible Codes" section is a little difficult to swallow (probably because of the hype surrounding Bible Codes, rather than what the author actually says).

His insistence that we read the Bible to know God, rather than to know ourselves (or our purpose) is refreshing, in a world bound up in either intellectual reading of the Bible to tear it down, or emotional reading of the Bible to build ourselves up.
