REALLY Great, Helpful Book

I got this book for an online class, and it was so informative and helpful, that I only had to reach out to the teacher MAYBE twice for assistance. I would especially recommend this book for those that haven't been in the HTML world for a while (it's been 10 years for me), and even those learning for the first time. Really great step by step learning, with reviews at the end that push you just that little bit more to really make sure what you learned is concrete in your mind.

I also RENTED this book through Amazon, rather than purchasing it, for the first time. I will definitely do it again. Very reasonable price, and the return process couldn't be easier.

Web Authoring class

I required this book for a web authoring class at a local community junior college. Although I would have preferred a different book that has different methods of teaching CSS and HTML, this is what I was stuck with. I did get an "A" in the class, but I also had to do extensive research online (using Google and YouTube) to learn about the different commands and structure.

Outstanding book for college course HTML & CSS

I am currently using this book for a college course on HTML & CSS as well as taking other web design courses and using a total of 8 books for all of my classes. This book is simply outstanding. I've taken years of college courses before and have been through many coding course books over the years. This book is a deep dive into html5 and css3 while providing good information for supporting older browsers. It seems very comprehensive and the follow-along tutorials are very helpful, enjoyable to do, and tackle realistic web site situations. The layout of the book is excellent and it is a very visual book, which is as helpful as a well laid out website, which helps me out a lot. It is a mass of information being presented and the book does a very good job of explaining some of the hard to get concepts within CSS. This is not a light book, or only high-level covering HTML/CSS and design, or a light beginners guide, or a book for dummies. It is a very thorough guide to learning HTML and CSS. It takes me a couple of days to get through each tutorial and work along. Two solid long days. This book is outstanding and I wish that more highly technical books that teach coding, scripting, and the like, were approached just like this book does which I find highly effective and just a pleasure to learn with. Hats off to the author and publisher!

too many mistakes, outdated material

This book is teeming with mistakes. Singleton implementations are broken(the current idiom for singleton is enum singleton, static class holder(described in this book) is an idiom for safe publication only, but it does not work for singleton because there can be several classloaders in JVM) - double checked locking in this book misses volatile keyword, which is crucial. Nevertheless, the book confirms that implementation does not work and says that "the problem was reportedly fixed in Java 5". Guys, I've bought this book for Java 7 certification, of course it should reflect changes made in Java 5.

The authors also do not distinguish the difference between widening of primitive types and upcasting of classes.

The sum() method on page 166 creates n Double object wrappers, instead of using primitive double variable etc. and so on.

This book also contains many groundless optimization tips, for example it states that final classes in Java are more efficient, because "the method calls are resolved in compiler time" . That is wrong for Hotspot JVM, because it's smart enough to apply analogous optimization looking whether the method is effectively overriden in subclass or not - it's done during the classloading and has nothing to do with final keyword.
You should not justify twisting your code only by a hypothesis that there may exist some JVM where some specific optimization *may* work.

A good review but has errors

I used this book to study for the OCPJP Java 1.7 exam. It prepared me. I used Mock Exam 1 as an open book test. Good thing I did it as open-book because several answers were wrong. In particular this : Question 83 asks you to choose 1 correct answer from 4 possible code snippets. The problem is that two of them are right. The answer book says "Options b) and c) uses the finally block, which is not applicable with try-with-resource." Which is incorrect. The FINALLY clause is perfectly acceptable with try-with-resource. Some of the questions also had typographical, syntax, and grammar errors, which make it seem as if they rushed to press without bug-proofing the exams.

Otherwise, this was a good study aid. It seems comprehensive.

Good Preparation- I passed on the first try

I bought the Kindle version. It's only like $20 or so. I'm studying for both the OCA and the OCP at the same time. I have my OCA scheduled in a few days, and I'll schedule my OCP later. I've noticed that this helps me with my OCP preparation as well as my OCA. I recommend it, as well as reading the online Oracle Java learning trails, and the enthuware.com mock exams. These three resources will help with OCP. I have an excellent book for the OCA, which of course paired with enthuware.com mock exams and the learning trails.

Update- I completed this book the first time. It's like 650 pages. I will re-read it and then take the enthuware mock exams I bought (which they updated for me recently). I like the book, I like the writing style, I believe in the content, and it's nice to have somebody gather this information for me in a way that helps me target the exam. I'll update this when I get results on my exam. My recommendation is to read it twice, and I'm following my own recommendation. 650 pages is a lot of information to take in.

Update- After reading this book twice, taking and reviewing both included exams, reading the online Oracle.com Javadocs for the OCP JP SE 7 certification, getting a wee bit of practical experience, and taking and reviewing all 5+1 associated Enthuware exams, I passed the 804 exam on my first try. I got a 70%, where 65% is a passing score. This book was an important introductory step toward getting this certification. The study process up to today (June 9 2014 pass) took me 6 months of part-time study.

I recommend studying this book as a part of the above steps to prepare for the 804 exam.

Disappointing

I used books written by Mike Meyers to pass A+ and Net+ exams, both of which were written very well, contained minimal errors, and provided comprehensive coverage without unnecessary repetition. I have to say, this book left something to be desired. First of all, Mike Meyers is not the author as the title might suggest, he is the editor (and a poor one at that). This book, which was written by two other authors, was haphazardly put together with apparently little collaboration. This becomes apparent as the reader progresses through the book, as a number of topics are inadequately covered with very little detail, often repetitively. Readers will feel a sense of deja vu several times throughout the book, thinking "hasn't this been covered already, and this new explanation is equally vague." I am recently CCNA - Security certified; I can say based off of that training that some of the assertions in this book are either inaccurate or do not tell the entire story. Furthermore, the knowledge that readers will acquire from this book is more theoretical than practical, which may be more of a critique on the Security+ objectives themselves rather than any neglect of authorship in this regard.

The book contradicts itself and contains a number of obvious grammatical and pedagogical errors. For example, on page 351 the authors write "most computer viruses self-replicate without the knowledge of the computer user." Yet on page 356, the authors assert that a worm self-replicates, writing "Compare this to viruses, which cannot self-replicate." This is not an anomaly within the book, but an example of one of many frustrating mistakes that are confusing to the reader. I was disappointed in this book, which I had bought because I was familiar with and loved the editor's previous books.

That being said, this book may give you what you need to pass the exam if you can move past annoying errors and repetition, and particularly if you also already have experience or related training. Without that, I'm not sure this would be enough to pass the exam, but I have yet to take it. There may be a better source that would more effectively give you everything you need. If I had it to do over again, I would buy another book if one was available for a similar price.

I passed my exam on Aug 9th. This is a very easy ready book that helped me a lot passing Security+. I really like the size and feel unlike Conklin that is hard cover. You can skim some topics if you feel comfortable. In my case I spent more time on protocols and cryptography and network security topics.
I highly recommend using Security+ study topics (from CompTIA site) as a guide when reading this book though some topics might be duplicated (repetition does not hurt). In addition to this book, I spent some great time on Youtube for topics that were a little tough.
This book is written to understand the subject not just to pass the test. I will keep this book for future reference.
Since this book is called ‘Security+ SY0-401’, it should follow the Security+ objective topics. Topics are scatted all over the book and Index is not that great, so have a copy of the exam’s objective and make notes on it.
It took me only 3weeks to pass Security+ after Network+ using same Author AND no other expensive practice test and I’m a newbie in IT (Just college experience).

Good for review, but don't rely solely on this book.

I like it, but don't rely ONLY on this for the test.
I read the entire David L. Prowse SYO-301 book, did all those practice tests and exercises. Then, I skimmed through most of this book and read up on chapters that were challenging for me to digest (mostly PKI, encryption and authentication server topics) to reinforce my learning.
If you know every sentence of every page of this book, you'll pass the test. However, I would also recommend getting your hands on other materials and trying to APPLY your knowledge before taking the exam. Not one thing is the be-all, end-all answer key to passing Sec+.
During the Sec+ studies, I also read the entire Mike Meyers A+ book; an entire college book (800 pages) for Network+; ProProf's online notes; Professor Messer videos on Youtube; AND the COMPTIA Certmaster program for Sec+ V.301.

I wanted to know the material inside and out. Not just "know the answers", but understand WHY things are the way they are. I passed A+ and Sec+ within a week of each other. Sec+ was the more challenging one.

About the Author
Mike Love is a founding member of The Beach Boys, considered to be the most popular American band in history, with 13 Gold Albums, 55 top-100 singles, and four #1 hits. Love has been the lead singer of the group one of its principal lyricists since its inception in 1961. His credits include such pop classics as "Good Vibrations," "California Girls," "I Get Around," "Fun Fun Fun," and "Kokomo." Love has received an Ella Award for his song writing, and, as part of The Beach Boys, he is a member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the Vocal Group Hall of Fame; and has received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Suprisingly Good

I'm not a big fan of ML, in general...He seems very egotistical, always trying to make sure everyone knows he wrote all the lyrics and Brian wasnt the only genius, and he wrote Kokomo which went to #1 without Brian, and no, he didn't say "dont F with the formula" when Brian did pet sounds/smile, and answers interview questions about "what are your biggest regrets" with instead of some sort of introspective answer it always ends up being some form of "my biggest regret is the Wilson's all did drugs but I didn't", etc etc.

That said, the book was surprisingly good...Yes, it had somewhat of a revisionist history, trying to make sure he doesn't come off as a villain, but he was also surprisingly honest about things I thought he might not even mention in the book. Surprisingly self-deprecating at times. At least more than I would've expected from the guy who gave that R & R Hall of fame speech.
As a Beach Boy Fan, i couldn't put it down. Was great to hear his perspective on different Beach Boys lore, how he saw things...I wonder how much he wrote and how much James Hirsch just filled in, I would be curious to know that. But overall, as far as readability, I read it all in one sitting and was sad when it was over. (Note: I've read about 3 or 4 Beach Boys books in the last few years, another one that is worth reading [if tabloidy] is "Heroes And Villans" by Steve Gaines. I would put that and this one as the 2 most compelling/fascinating Beach Boys reads...Will be interesting to see how Brian's book is).

He's hard to understand in some parts of the book. But he is explaining their road to success! And seeing him recently in OKC he hasn't changed much! Love him!
