Terrible!

Bottom line is this is a horrible book. It is horrible on so many different levels, it is hard to even know where to start. I am frightened that young people that are taught math from this book might actually end up one day doing math that matters . . . calculating the proper dosage of a medication, or computing stresses in an airplane wing. This book simply does not have the math content needed to equip a student for higher levels of mathematical education and real world problem solving.

In the past, I have taught math with Saxton material, Glenco material as well as others. You will never find a perfect book or curriculum, but in the past I always felt like the books provided enough of a basis in math to allow me to properly educate the children. Not in this case. This book does not provide the depth or rigor needed in Algebra II to prepare students for Precalculus, Calculus and then college math.

What is critical for students to get out of Algebra II is how to perform mathematical manipulation. How to unwind various algebraic equations to simplify them and to push them through to a solution. How to untangle complicated equations of various types, and skills to unwind various every more complex mathematical expressions.

Instead, this book seems more like some sort of group love project where we all sit around and think about math, and not really develop the fundamental math skills that would allow someone to eventually become an engineer, or to use math as a tool to solve a real world problem.

As I am sitting with this book trying to create lessons for students, I am left confused. What is the real point of the lesson? So many of the lessons seem to be a random collection of hodge podge thoughts about a general broad category.

My second issue is the supporting "Big Ideas" WEB site that is intended to support teachers using this book in the curriculum. Despite the claims, it is little more than a PDF version of the book. The site is hard to navigate, confusing, and is all skeleton and no real meat. In particular I was very disappointed to learn that the ExamView test bank had nothing but multiple choice answers . . . no short answers or more in depth type of questions.

The thing I found peculiar is how excellent Larson's precalculus book is. Very detailed, challenging, and thorough. To me, the enormous problem is that Larson's Algebra II book does not at all prepare a student to be successful in the next class using his Precalculus book. It is as if the two books were written by two different people . . . one a disciplined mathematics specialist (precalculus book) and the other a burned out hippie (this algebra II book).

So, as I prepare my Algebra II lessons for next year I am sort of at a loss on how to make this book work. It is going to be a very long year, and if you have the opportunity run, and choose a different curriculum.

Good supplementary reading for physics undergrads

This is an interesting book but the intended readership is not clear. No layman can use it -- the math employed is too sophisticated. Nor is it really a QM text. It would probably make good supplementary reading for math and physics undergrads who are taking a QM course. It is written with insight and there are many ideas explained here -- e.g., on the Poisson bracket and variational principles -- that I haven't seen explained so clearly and succinctly elsewhere. But unfortunately it can't serve as a text (nor is it intended to, according to the author). Incidentally, it has 404 pages -- not 256.

This is a very good book.

This book has done more to explain to me concepts associated with QM than any other source. It packs a lot into a few hundred pages, so I found that re-reading was necessary - but that's true whenever you study any complex subject. The author states quite clearly that his aim is to teach you about QM, not the full theory itself. But I think he does more than that. I've been able to pick up other texts I've bought and make sense of them for the first time. This is a very good book.

My Heart's Desire is another delightful book in the Second Chance Brides series. Having previously read Kissing in the Dark, I was excited to see how the author would address some mature topics forming the foundation of the story in a "sweet edition", and I was not disappointed. The author creates a wonderful story of a man's struggles between right-and-wrong, black-and-white, and love-and-honor and a woman's struggle to rebuild her life after trauma and loss and does so without including any "sensual" aspects of any of the relationships. My Heart's Desire is just that - a man and a woman fight to balance their personal struggles with their heart's desire for each other.

The author uses wonderful imagery throughout the story to create a picture of the characters. This book introduces more primary characters than other books in the series - as Faith moves to town with two children and four "aunts" - but the author creates a family unit that makes it easy for the reader to fall in love with all of them. I really love how the names of Faith's aunts are flowers and creates a tie-in to Faith's plants in the greenhouse. The names also create an image of the beauty and strength and delicacy of the aunts. At one point, Duke compares himself and his brothers to different types of trees. This additional tie in to nature creates an image of stature and strength in the Grayson men. The Grayson wives are also compared to the seasons of the year -- and around all of the imagery of nature is Nancy Grayson, the matriarch of the family, and the epitome of mother earth with her grounding influence. This imagery of nature and its healing properties and its nurturing growth is a wonderfully-pleasing way to create a mental picture of the key characters and their journeys in this story.

Throughout the story, Duke's strength is drawn from his black-and-white view of right and wrong. Because of these strongly held views, he continues to find himself struggling to find a balance between his view of right-and-wrong and situations in which he finds himself in a grey area influenced more by emotion than fact. This struggle makes it difficult for Duke to accept what he finds to be unacceptable situations with Faith and her family. His sense of honor battles with his love for Faith and her family. His emotional turmoil over feeling the need to choose one or the other makes for a compelling story for our hero. Faith's secrets lie in her past but threaten her future in Fredonia and with Duke. Her childhood influences her view of right-and-wrong and her "shades of gray" view of the world drives her actions and decisions as she strives to create a new life for her children and her aunts. As a reader, you are drawn to Faith's strength, and her vulnerability, and her compassion, and her love for family. You mourn and celebrate with Faith and Duke as they navigate their way through trials and tribulations with the hope of finding love at the other end.

My Heart's Desire also dedicates a good portion of the story to getting to know Adam, Faith's teenage brother, and Rebecca, Radford's daughter (we initially met her as a young child in Twice Loved). Their budding friendship is sweet to see and also lays the foundation for what we know are future books that focus on their love story. While this story represents the last of the four Grayson brothers to find their happily-ever-after, there is so much more to look forward to from Wendy Lindstrom and Fredonia, New York.

Duke's Story

This is Duke's story. The setting is now 1879 and he's 30 years old. He's been the sheriff for 8 years and it's election time again. Unfortunately, he's recently injured his shoulder and that's giving his competition reason to campaign against him. Then, he encounters a young boy attempting to steal a hair brush. As it turns out, the boy's name is Adam and he and his sister and her "aunts" have recently moved to Fredonia.

Faith Wilkins and her family are escaping their past. They intend to start fresh by opening a greenhouse where they can sell herbs and ointments. She also wants to offer massages to the citizens.

Duke cannot afford to allow any irreputable business to operate in his jurisdiction, so he goes to investigate. What follows is a tale that dips into all sorts of deep topics, yet the author somehow maintains an appropriate balance without ever getting too heavy or dark.

Themes covered are: honesty / integrity, morality / ethics, trust, and what is family.
Subthemes are - jealousy and young love / maturity

The author also introduces several new characters, but it's easy to keep up with who's who and their back story is just as good as the main story. In fact, I found all the character development to be solid and good.

Romance - depends on which book you read -
Kissing in the Dark has more spice to it and falls in the PG13 category whereas My Heart's Desire is trimmed down of anything eyebrow raising and remains in the PG category.

Language -again depends on which book -
Kissing in the Dark has a couple of strong words, but the setting makes sense. Those few words are removed in My Heart's Desire.

Violence - There are a few fight scenes and a couple of them involve someone getting shot.

All in all, it's a good book that keeps the reader engaged. I never felt that the story dragged. It seemed to be well balanced in length and content.

I think this book was the one I liked the best. I was amazed when I read in this book what all $100.00 could buy: a team of horses, a house, and feed a family for years! I have already pre-ordered Book #5.

A wonderful romance

The Earl of Montclair never recovered from the death of his beloved wife six years ago. He depends on his oldest daughter Allis to run the castle and his friend Baron Rennick DeFrouchette to oversee the estate. Although not up to it, Montclair hosts a tournament. On the eve of the event, Allis sees Connor of Llanstephan, a poor wandering knight whom King Richard sent home from the Holy Land in disgrace. Connor told His Highness that the slaughter of unarmed prisoners, even infidels, was wrong. Allis and Connor are instantly attracted to each other. Although she detests Rennick as a bully, Allis accepts his proposal because she fears for her siblings and her people.

Lord Oswald arrives and meets with Rennick to discuss the plot to assassinate King Richard. Oswald believes that Connor is the perfect pawn to kill the king while bringing the Welsh conspirators support to their cause if Rennick can keep Allis out of the way.

THE MAIDEN AND HER KNIGHT portrays a different picture of King Richard the Lionhearted through the eyes of a once believing but now skeptical Connor. The story line is exciting as readers wonder if Oswald is right that Connor is the perfect dupe to kill His Highness because of the horrifying Crusade. Allis is a brave sacrificing soul while Connor suffers from what he observed in the Holy Land. Margaret Moore, already known for strong tales like HIS FORBIDDEN KISS, A SCOUNDREL'S KISS, and ROGUE'S EMBRACE, paints another winning historical tale.

just ok

Well I have to agree with several of the other reviewers that this book didn't quite live up to the back cover. I have enjoyed several of Margaret Moore's other books and was expecting this one to be as enjoyable as those. The best i can give it is an ok rating.
The story is of a lonely penniless knight trying to make his way in a world were you are ruled by your actions. He has fallen out of favor with the king and now is working to rebuild his life. The heroine is the beautiful, dutyful daughter of a man who has no will to live. She has had to take over the running of the castle at a very young age as well as bringing up her younger siblings. She is being courted by an evil man who turns her stomach. When the hero and heroine meet by accident they soon realize thier feelings for each other but know that they cannot act upon them.
I liked the secondary characters more that the major players. I would like to see books with the brother and sister as the leads. I liked the book but just didn't get into it like I thought I would.

A very predictable romance

This book had a great synopsis on the back which pulled me in. But after the first few chapters it got "tiring". About the 4th or 5th time I read about Conners reasons for disliking the King and why he was discraced and sent home from the Holy Lands I no longer cared.
The story starts out showing the stuggle of a young woman who has had to grow up very fast and take on much of the rolls of both mother, father and nurse maid. He father it seems has never recovered from the death of her mother. She is town between doing what she thinks will save her brother and sister from hurt in that she will wed Rennick though he is a huge jerk.
As the story unfolds there is intrigue, attempted overthrow of the King etc...
The problem is there is to much repeat of information, and nothing that really hangs you onto the story I had predicted what was going to happen after the first mention of conspiracy.
I would have to agree with the other reviewer who gave this book 2.5 stars.

This cookbook is great to have on hand for entertaining. All recipes are for small bite tasting dishes and the accompanying photos are really helpful for what the finished products will look like.

There is an unusually broad spectrum of recipe types including Mediterranean, Scandinavian, Asian, Indian, North African, Middle Eastern, and the Americas. The recipes have varying degrees of complexity which lend to a wide variety of cooking comfort levels. A few recipes have specialized ingredients (example: squid ink) but most recipes have ingredients that are readily accessible at a good grocery store.

Types of dishes include dips, bites, and desserts. There are also a few pages dedicated to entertainment planning.

I recommend this cookbook to people who like to entertain.

About the Author
R. T. France has taught at London Bible College and was principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, from 1989 to 1995. He has also been the rector of seven Anglican parishes.
