Assholes: A Theory, by Aaron James

In the New York Times bestseller Nick Hornby calls “helpful, stimulating, and very timely” (The Believer), philosopher Aaron James presents a theory of the asshole that is both intellectually provocative and existentially necessary.

What does it mean for someone to be an asshole? The answer is not obvious, despite the fact that we are often personally stuck dealing with people for whom there is no better name. Try as we might to avoid them, assholes are found everywhere and in multiple iterations: smug assholes, royal assholes, the presidential asshole, corporate assholes, reckless assholes. The list goes on.

Asshole management begins with asshole understanding. Much as Machiavelli illuminated political strategy for princes, this book finally gives us the concepts to think or say why assholes disturb us so, and explains why such people seem part of the human social condition, especially in an age of raging narcissism and unbridled capitalism. These concepts are also practically useful, as understanding the asshole we are stuck with helps us think constructively about how to handle problems he (and they are mostly all men) presents. We get a better sense of when the asshole is best resisted, and when he is best ignored—a better sense of what is, and what is not, worth fighting for.

From Booklist
Hot on the heels of Geoffrey Nunberg’s Ascent of the A-Word (2012) comes another discussion of assholes and what to do about them. Actually, that’s a bit too glib: James, a philosophy professor, takes a slightly different approach than Nunberg. Where Nunberg focused on the history of assholism (with side trips into such subjects as the difficulties in writing about assholes without censorship), James proposes a theory of assholes (a person is an asshole when his sense of entitlement makes him immune to complaints from other people) that explains not only why assholes are a vital part of human society, but also how to recognize them and coexist with them. The author addresses some fundamental questions—such as whether assholes are born or made, a sort of nature-versus-nurture debate for the asshole crowd—and rigorously avoids what must have been a strong temptation to go for the cheap laugh (although it must be pointed out that this is definitely a lighter book than Nunberg’s more academic study). --David Pitt

Review
“Convincing and often quite funny. . . . James neatly unpacks the basic features of the most loathsome individual. . . . [He] makes a rigorous case for why we should take the problem of the asshole seriously.”
—Los Angeles Review of Books

“James’s keen intelligence overwhelms you, and you realize that Assholes is helpful, stimulating, and very timely.”
—Nick Hornby, The Believer

“Enjoyable. . . . Light-hearted yet thought-provoking. . . . Importantly, [James makes] us confront a crucial question, which, I believe, we ask ourselves all too infrequently: How much of an asshole am I?”
—Alex Balk, Slate

“James neatly does what philosophers must do: he defines his terms, organizes and codifies, declares his own loyalties; he locates himself on the spectrum of assholery and suggest origins both psychological and sociological. The result is a delightful combination of the demotic and the technical.”
—Harper’s Magazine

“James’s volume is equal parts philosophical meditation and historical survey, but its true value lies in his attempt to precisely define the term.”
—New York Magazine

“The times are right for a follow-up [to Frankfurt’s On Bullshit]. . . . James’s volume is in roughly equal parts a philosophical meditation, a pop historical survey and a practical guide to negotiate the treacherous rectal waters in which we swim; but, its true value lies in his attempt to define the term precisely. . . . In Assholes, he is doing more than poking fun at all the people we like to despise.”
—The Innovation Journal

“Intriguing. . . . To put meat on the bones of his theory, James names names.”
—The Chronicle of Higher Education

“Aaron James provides us with a delightful philosophical romp through the world of assholes. I was especially tickled by his analysis of different types: smug assholes, royal assholes, the presidential asshole, corporate assholes, the reckless assholes, to name a few.”
—Robert I. Sutton, Stanford professor and author of the New York Times bestsellers The No Asshole Rule and Good Boss, Bad Boss

“[James’s] witty and accessible study of the personal and social problems the asshole creates draws on his lucid and brilliant accounts of the best in contemporary moral and political philosophy. James’s analysis of asshole capitalism is a tour de force of philosophically astute political analysis and criticism. This is a book that should appeal equally to the general reader and the philosophical specialist.”
—Marshall Cohen, founding editor of Philosophy and Public Affairs and university professor emeritus, University of Southern California

“A serious and sometimes whimsical treatment of a common epithet.”
—Publishers Weekly

“James’ research is both thorough and imaginative; his impressive source list ranges from obscure philosophy books to popular websites to Rudyard Kipling to Kanye West, hip-hop’s greatest asshole. The author’s enthusiasm for the subject makes it possible to get through the book quickly. . . . There are moments of great insight and outright hilarity.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Convincing. . . . It is in his chapter ‘Asshole Capitalism’ where James hits his stride.”
—Maclean’s (Toronto)

“Persuasive. . . . The thrust of James’s thesis is timely. . . . Energetically argued and provoking.”
—Literary Review (UK)

A Wake-Up Call for America
By Michael Kaiser
In some ways it reads like a college textbook but the content makes it well worth the effort when the going gets a little tough. Aaron James for better or worse has produced a handbook for our times and hits the mark when it comes to diagnosing what in the hell is wrong with us, how we have lost the capacity to treat each other in a civilized manner. The book is a wake-up call and how with very little effort we have the power to change society for the better.

No famiy is perfect. Yes
By Brenda
At 68 I decided it was time to determine if I was an A''hole. I found the book fascinating as I thought back through my marriage and picking a partner and my career dealing with A"holes. It's too late for the book to help me manage these types, but I now can avoid them. I have sixteen Grandchildren who range from 19yrs old to 36. I've ordered 13 copies to hand out to those grandchildren who will learn from this book. Something extraordinary about life, people, bosses, professors, and hopefully help them choose their life partners. For the other three, I wouldn't dare to hand them the book, since I found their traits in a couple of chapters. No famiy is perfect.
Yes, after reading the book, I have determined I have been bothersome at times under certain situations, but the book confirmed I am not a certifiable A'hole. Good to know. ;-)

A must read for every grown-up education
By Jeff Dwyer
I picked up this book because of its provocative title and handsome cover design. But, I read it carefully because it’s a very interesting, carefully researched and skillfully written book. Aaron James presents this complex subject with humor and insight that only someone who has given his topic a lot of thought could accomplish. This isn’t a quick read. On the contrary, I read a few pages at each sitting and then pondered and questioned what James presented until the next time I picked it up. It caused me to wonder if I was an example described in this book more so than others I encounter daily? Hmmm? Deep stuff! A good book makes you want to reach out to the author and talk with him when you’ve finished reading his book. The reader doesn’t want the author/reader experience to end. That’s how I felt when I finished this book. I wanted to take one of James’ classes at U-Cal, but I’m too old and I live too far away. I envied his discussion group at the Anteater Tavern that is mentioned in his acknowledgments. So, I’ve bought half dozen copies of the book and sent them off to friends whom I know want to explore this topic in depth. I recommend this book without reservation because I feel it will help anyone moderate one’s own bad behavior.

Relativity Simply Explained (Dover Classics of Science & Mathematics), by Martin Gardner

Since the publication of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, the discovery of such astronomical phenomena as quasars, pulsars, and black holes — all intimately connected to relativity — has provoked a tremendous upsurge of interest in the subject. This volume, a revised version of Martin Gardner's earlier Relativity for the Million, brings this fascinating topic up to date. Witty, perceptive, and easily accessible to the general reader, it is one of the clearest and most entertaining introductions to relativity ever written.
Mr. Gardner offers lucid explanations of not only the special and general theories of relativity, but of the Michelson-Morley experiment, gravity and spacetime, Mach's principle, the twin paradox, models of the universe, and other topics. A new Postscript, examining the latest developments in the field, and specially written for this edition, is also included.
The clarity of the text is especially enhanced by the brilliant graphics of Anthony Ravielli, making this "by far the best layman's account of this difficult subject." — Christian Science Monitor.

About the Author
Martin Gardner was a renowned author who published over 70 books on subjects from science and math to poetry and religion. He also had a lifelong passion for magic tricks and puzzles. Well known for his mathematical games column in Scientific American and his "Trick of the Month" in Physics Teacher magazine, Gardner attracted a loyal following with his intelligence, wit, and imagination.

Martin Gardner: A Remembrance
The worldwide mathematical community was saddened by the death of Martin Gardner on May 22, 2010. Martin was 95 years old when he died, and had written 70 or 80 books during his long lifetime as an author. Martin's first Dover books were published in 1956 and 1957: Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, one of the first popular books on the intellectual excitement of mathematics to reach a wide audience, and Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, certainly one of the first popular books to cast a devastatingly skeptical eye on the claims of pseudoscience and the many guises in which the modern world has given rise to it. Both of these pioneering books are still in print with Dover today along with more than a dozen other titles of Martin's books. They run the gamut from his elementary Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing, which has been enjoyed by generations of younger readers since the 1980s, to the more demanding The New Ambidextrous Universe: Symmetry and Asymmetry from Mirror Reflections to Superstrings, which Dover published in its final revised form in 2005.

To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.

In the Author's Own Words:
"Politicians, real-estate agents, used-car salesmen, and advertising copy-writers are expected to stretch facts in self-serving directions, but scientists who falsify their results are regarded by their peers as committing an inexcusable crime. Yet the sad fact is that the history of science swarms with cases of outright fakery and instances of scientists who unconsciously distorted their work by seeing it through lenses of passionately held beliefs."

"A surprising proportion of mathematicians are accomplished musicians. Is it because music and mathematics share patterns that are beautiful?" — Martin Gardner

excellent but getting out of date
By Ben Crowell
This is a wonderful, nonmathematical introduction to special and general relativity. Gardner is a talented popularizer, and the two-color illustrations help make this an enjoyable book to read. My only misgiving is that the book is getting out of date on many topics. Ch. 1-6 are fine, but ch. 7, Tests of Relativity, is sorely in need of updating, and ch. 10-12, on cosmology, predate the recent revolution that has made cosmology a high-precision science and revealed that the universe is even stranger than we thought. I would like to see Gardner hand off this book to another writer who can produce a new, up to date edition.

A great book to start with.
By David Roberts
If you are looking for a comprehensive book to understand the nuances of Relativity theory, this isn't for you. However, if you are not mathematically inclined, or don't wish to dive into the math or physics just yet, this is a excellent choice.
This was the first book that I read on the subject of Einstein's theory. I found it entertaining and actually fun to read. I have not read any of Gardner's other books, but his writing style in this one makes for an easy read. It does not feel like you are reading much of a physics books at all.
Furthermore, the illustrations not only are well done, but they make it easier to understand the principles being explained.
If you are looking to know the basics of this theory, this is best book to own. Simple to read, good explanations, uncomplicated. If you are looking for more depth, than you will certainly move on to another book after this, but this is an excellent one to start with.

Best introduction to relativity
By taogoat
I recently read a handful of books on relativity, and I rank them as follows:

Highly recommended introductory works:
* Relativity Simply Explained by Martin Gardner -- best introductory book.
* The Elegant Universe (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- extremely lucid, but not as in-depth as Gardner's book -- possibly the best if you want a shorter introduction.
* Einstein by Walter Isaacson, chapter 6 (special relativity) & chapter 9 (general relativity) -- not just a great biography, also a very lucid explanation of Einstein's ideas.
* The Fabric of the Cosmos (chapters 2 & 3) by Brian Greene -- a discussion of general relativity & the nature of spacetime.

Further reading:
* Inside Relativity by Mook & Vargish -- great introduction to Newton, along with great sections on what high-speed objects look like and a great section on how Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism relate to relativity.
* Relativity Visualized by Lewis Carroll Epstein -- a good additional book to read, if you want to delve more into truly understanding how it works. Not recommended as an introduction.
* Relativity: A Very Short Introduction by Russell Stannard -- might be a good introduction, but not as lucid as some of the books above.
* Relativity by Albert Einstein -- not recommended. It's great if you want to see how Einstein explained it, but it is generally not a good introduction. Cumbersome, difficult, and boring.

Relative to the books above, Gardner's book gives the best history of the developments leading up to the theory of relativity. It gives numerous examples of the principle of relativity, which helps the reader ease into thinking in relative terms. It mentions a thought experiment about relativity by Poincare and a short story about relative changes by HG Wells. So it gives you a sense of what was going on prior to Einstein. None of the other books listed did that, or not as effectively.

It provides a history of ether and the efforts to preserve the concept of ether (which leads into the development of the theory of relativity). None of the other books listed did that. I found all of the pre-history to be essential to truly understanding relativity.

It does a great job explaining relativity in a lucid, straightforward manner with numerous examples. I think he explained the equivalence principle, which led to general relativity, better than any of the books above.

A reader could reasonably skip chapters 10-12 (on cosmology), which are out of date and which are likely covered better elsewhere. They still make interesting reading, especially the chapter on the shape of the universe, but they are not essential to understanding relativity.

This book is not perfect, and there are probably concepts that for some readers are better explained in other books. But, relative to the books listed above, I found it to be the best introductory book. Anyone interested in truly understanding relativity will likely want to read several books, in order to view it from multiple frames of reference.

If you'd like larger print and/or hardcover, the first edition of this book is just as good -- Relativity for the Million. My only complaint about Relativity Simply Explained is that the text is a little small.

Enjoy your studies of this fascinating subject!

cheers
:)

I was thinking there would be a lot of photos with the text. It turned out the illustrations are hand drawn illustrations by Tesla himself. Still good but no photos. Interesting to read what the man was thinking back in those days.

    Review
"Golden Age chic! Great fun!" (Stephen Baxter , International bestselling author of The Long Earth with Terry Pratchett, and Proxima)

Brooks’s terrific debut demonstrates that a good caper tale can take place anywhere, even in interstellar space. Capt. Ichabod Drift and the crew of the Keiko have an unusual approach to galactic law and order, one that ranks “convenience over obedience.” All of them have secrets that they’d rather not reveal, but Drift’s is the biggest of all: he was once known as Gabriel Drake, a notorious privateer. He thought he’d escaped his past, but now it has come calling in the form of Nicolas Kelsier, ex-minister of Extra-terrestrial Resource Acquisition for the Europan Commonwealth, and Drift’s former boss. Kelsier offers him both the carrot and the stick: Drift can take Kelsier’s smuggling commission and earn a handsome sum for himself and his crew—or have his past revealed to the Federation of African States and the rest of the galaxy. Even with elaborate planning, capers never run easily, and this one is no different. It will take all the skills of each of the Keiko’s crew members and some “outrageously ballsy chicanery” on Drift’s part if they are to escape with their lives, let alone make a profit. Fans of rip-roaring space adventures will greatly enjoy this one. (Publishers Weekly March 7th, 2016)

Brooks has concocted a space opera full of fast talk, action, and gratuitous violence. Brooks delivers a old-fashioned space Western peopled with likable, flawed characters who gallop across an entertaining page-turner. (Kirkus Reviews March 31st, 2016)

Brooks turns in an enjoyable adventure that has all of the fast action and clever dialog fans of the genre look for, with well-drawn secondary characters who also have moments to shine. Suggest this debut to enthusiasts of caper plots and stories such as Chris Wooding’s Ketty Jay novels, and, of course, Firefly. (Library Journal April 15th, 2016)

"Dark Run is a fun novel." (io9.com)

"Dark Run deserves to be this year'sbreak out.A space opera in the rollicking tradition of Timothy Zahn, John Scalzi, James S.A. Corey, C.J. Cherryh." (Andrew Liptak B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog)

"[Dark Run] doesn’t disappoint. With its fast moving action, wise-cracking dialogue and wry humour." (SFF World)

"Dark Run is a fast paced smuggler story that delivers all the crooked and devious action you could ask for." (SFBook Reviews)

"A pure scoundrel-centric tale that is worthy of the Serenity crew and will make any Firefly fan smile." (, Geek Dad)

    "Wicked." (, Geek Mom)

    About the Author
Mike Brooks was born in Ipswich, Suffolk in the UK and moved to Nottingham when he was eighteen to go to university. He’s stayed here ever since, and now lives with his wife, two cats, two snakes, and a collection of tropical fish. When not working for a homelessness charity, he plays guitar and sings in a punk band, watches football (soccer), MMA, and nature/science documentaries, goes walking in the Peak District or other areas of splendid scenery, and DJs wherever anyone will tolerate him. And, y’know, writes.

Amazong, you should read it, seriously. Go back up to the top and buy it. Go. Stop reading. Go.
    By MR Brown
It's fairly rare when I bother to do written reviews of books. I like them or don't like them to varying degrees and don't feel like it's important to tell people why I like them. That and I don't much like having to analyze a book I read for enjoyment because it wrecks it for me sometimes.

This book, I wanted to do at least a little something for. I don't think it's had enough praise personally.

There are a lot of people that compare this to Firefly*. It does have some of the things I valued most about Firefly such as the interplay of characters. You'll find a similar layout. A Captain that's got a past and a mostly stable moral compass...maybe it wobbles a little, sometimes. A strong female first mate or whatever you'd deem her, an amazing pilot, a talented engineer, and a mercenary. There are also characters that aren't exactly dups of the crew. Such as the tech wizard (I know sort of River, but not) and the gentle giant (sort of like Shepherd Book, but not). We have the tropes in other words.

Having said that, let me pause for a moment in this review (if you don't want to read my rant skip one paragraph). Some reviewers I have seen seem to think it's a sin or in some way degrading to note tropes in authors writing. Why? Tropes are an easy way for us puny humans to understand the world around us. They help writers build stable stories. The problem with tropes is when they are over used or too predictable. When EVERY $#%& @$*% *$#@ &%$# time you turn on the TV or open a book you find yourself SO UNGODLY BORED with the entire %$&#ing universe because you already know how the book or show ends within 5 minutes of watching or 10 pages of reading. Some people prefer this and that's fine, for them, for me, I need to be kept guessing. It's one thing to have a framework so you know, to move into the construction world for a moment, this building is going to be a rectangle and have 3 floors. However, If I open a book and already know, for the sake of the example, that there are going to be 3 bathrooms, 2 hot tubs, 65 windows, 35 doors, 6 different carpets coming in blue, green, turquoise, violet, puce and yellow (swatches with paint samples for each room available to the left). The siding will be an off blue and the shingles will be gray and slightly concave...then I don't really need to take your tour do I?

Anyway, review back on. I loved the interplay Mr. Brooks built into the characters. The silent histories he was able to fold in and expand upon as needed. For to my understanding a virtually new author to build such a beautiful interplay is amazing. I'm sure editing, alpha and beta readers will have had something to do with it, but you can do all the editing and rereading you want, but if the writer doesn't have what's needed in him or her to pull that information in and push it out better, then there really is no point and no help for it.

This is NOT a Firefly dup or knock off as I have seen sometimes, but I'd say it has a neighboring soul. I don't do the best reviews because I don't do them often, as noted at the beginning of this whole huge thing. The best I can say is if you haven't tried this book, you should. If you're good at reviews, do it. It's worth it, in my opinion.

    * For those who aren't quite as much of a geek as me, Firefly was an American Space Western Drama series that ran from 2002-2003 on Fox written and directed by Joss Whedon. You may have a better idea of the world if you saw the 2005 film adaptation Serenity.

Fun read. Characters have a lot going on
    By Amazon Customer
Fun read. Characters have a lot going on, and are the real center of the story. No deep ethical issues examined in any non-simple way, but the characters are plausible and interesting, and the story moves along. Good enough to want to read book 2.

I thought I would like Dark Run more
    By F. Shifreen
I thought I would like Dark Run more, because I read an interview in Gizmodo with him. He envisages a universe powered by Alcubierre drives
and no FTL communications, aged tech and space opera. I am always looking for good science fiction. I am old enough to have been young in the golden age. What is coming out now is generally so bad to be unreadable. I like some Vernor Vinge, some Peter Hamilton, a few others. Brooks writes snappy dialog and action, but his vision of tech becomes steampunk, whirring lenses on eyes, metal hands that owe more to a Victorian past then a possible future. That bothers me. I think digital is here to stay. Miniature tech that is disposable and available. Replacement eyes and hands in the future, including firearms would be smaller and smarter. It would not the be wild west moved into space, with big guns in holsters. So I could not buy into his vision because it depends too much on the past, not the future. I wish he had thought out the rest of his vision. To me the world view of a science fiction books colors everything. If the rationale is missing, the book does not work. Dark Run only so so
