First I gotta say I really enjoy listening to Steve Ray every time he's on Catholic Answers Live on the local EWTN radio station. His energy and his knowledge and his patience and his question answering ability about the Catholic church is just amazing.

I love this book for its content and Steve's tale of conversion. That being said I'm disappointed in what the book turned out to be. I was expecting to hear about his journey. Instead, according to my Kindle app, I find I'm done reading the book at only 43%. That's right 57% of this book is footnotes!

I would say Steve's story itself is maybe 10 percent or less of the 43% of the book. The rest of the book (while fine) reads more like a college paper. He sets up three topics and then defends them with EXTENSIVE quotes from the bible, the catechism and the church fathers, not much of his own story or his way of defending the church. Which is fine, but I didn't think I was purchasing a simple reference book. I want to hear Steve talk not simply quote source material.

I feel this book is meant to be purchased printed so that you can give it to a protestant to read or to have on hand for quick reference. But you'll need a lot more reference books because Steve only covers those three topics.

A relentless search for truth whereever it leads

Steve had a problem. He knew Jesus was for real but he was beginning to find that his presuppositions about the church were not. This is the story of how he fought against the Tiber tide until he could fight no longer and gave in to that which he had persecuted for so long. ("Crossing the Tiber" or "Swimming the Tiber" is popular Catholic convert slang referring to the Tiber river in Rome with regard to joining the Roman Catholic church.) Steve is one of many Protestants who had realized their one defining principle was that they were not Catholic. Their search for the roots of their faith led them to see the internal contradictions in the Protestant worldview and the discoveries were frightening and life-altering. Steve was goaded on to the deep Tiber waters by his loving wife and it is clear that the changes have been a spiritual empowerment in their family.

With extensive footnotes that do not distract from the primary text, Steve relays their story as he first wrote it down for friends and family. It is a heartfelt and appealing story that makes us want to join in the journey with them. The journey ends with their somewhat hesitant realization that Jesus was alive and well in the Catholic church they had distrusted. It was a conversion not far from that of the Apostle Paul in realizing the one whom they persecuted was calling them to His family.

The brief overview of the Ray family conversion is just the beginning. Steve adds to that story an historical, scriptural, and enlightening study of Baptism and then of the Eucharist. Each of the three sections could stand alone in scope and depth of study, especially in light of the extensive footnotes and references. It is a conversion story that packs a theological wallop without skipping a beat. Emotionally and intellectually challenging and inspiring at the same time. You will not easily dismiss this incredible treatise of faith.

Broad, Challenging, Thoughtfully Structured and Tremendous Fun !

A wonderful collection of puzzles thoughtfully selected and well presented. The hints and solutions parts are particularly well compiled, allowing for the more difficult puzzles to be revealed. This selection, reminiscent in style of Martin Gardner, nonetheless brings together old and new puzzles in a very straightforward and accessible fashion. For some puzzles, notably for me the "Monty Hall Problem", the analysis is beautifully phrased, offering several different ways to look at a famously confusing issue. There were some new treats here too; it is an inspired compendium that includes pure arithmetic, math, word problems and physics problems. An absolute please to dip into, as well as immerse oneself.

Since the format of these two books provides a laundry list of tips for improving C++ code (Effective C++ contains 50 tips, while More Effective C++ adds 35 more), the CD-ROM format is a natural fit and a convenient way to read both titles. The CD-ROM format adds extra material, including several magazine articles and an annotated list of books for further reading.

A handy full-text search engine lets you cross-reference material from both books. (Alternatively, you can just browse and read at your own pace.) The CD-ROM provides full control of image size and other options, making it useful for virtually any system, from desktop to laptop. (It requires only Netscape 4 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 browsers or later). Essential reading for every C++ programmer

Even if you already have paper copies of Scott's Effective C++ books -- and you should, if you're a C++ programmer -- you will probably find the online version indispensible. It's a website-on-a-CD containing all of the text of Scott's books, and more.
"Indispensible?" you ask. Yes, that's what I wrote, and I know it's a strong word so let me tell you some reasons why I find it indispensible personally: It's full-text searchable. It's thoroughly cross-hyperlinked. You can create links from other documents, such as your development team's coding standards (hint hint), directly to specific pages and paragraphs in the CD -- and this is especially useful if you put the CD on your LAN. And you'll get information you won't find in the paper versions, including late-breaking information in magazine articles from people like Tom Cargill, Jack Reeves, and other past and present writers for C++ Report -- including some of Scott's own later articles. (Disclaimer: Yes, one of my articles also appears there, but I get no benefit from recommending this CD because I don't get a penny if you buy it. I'm recommending it because I personally love it and use it routinely, and I think you will do the same. My fondest wish is that I can get other books, including my own, available in this format... Scott and Addison-Wesley are working on this and some other very cool related ideas.)
In short: Run, don't walk, and pick up this essential reading for every C++ programmer. Even if you already have paper copies, there's a lot more here for you from one of the world's leading consulting experts on the C++ language, Scott Meyers. He is regularly consulted by everyone from defense companies to the producers of the world's best and fastest electronic games. Through his books, you will get the same benefits in the comfort of your home -- and now, in the comfort of your LAN or laptop.

The natural choice after learning the basics

Not a primer, not a tutorial, this book (CD-ROM actually) is invaluable for any C++ programmer. Most books will touch on some of the pitfalls or meanings behind many different concepts. Effective C++ focuses on particularly tricky concepts that could create huge problems for the inexperienced programmer. I particularly like that the author doesn't simply state "This is how you do it." Instead, he usually states a problem, gives an 'obvious solution' (as in, how most programmers straight out of the average primer would write it) and then proceeds to explain how it will blow up in the programmer's face. This is followed by the 'why' of the resulting explosion, and finally how to fix it.
The writing style is lucid and even amusing at times, and the CD-ROM makes it easy to jump from related topic to related topic. While each piece can stand alone, taking the links in the book will allow more complete understanding of the concepts.
Finally, the addition of some magazine articles involving Exception Handling are excellent and possibly worth the price of the book by itself.

A must buy - even if you already have the books

The Effective C++ series should be in the library of every professional C++ developer; the practical value of Scott's advice is undisputed.
The effort that has gone into this CD is clear and the end result is a very easy to use product making the valuable information even more accessible.
I'm a long time user of these books, but I can't remember everthing in them. While coding I'll often recall something mentioned in one of the items and I find that the CD is proving the quickest and easiest way to find and review the material.
The inherent (item based) nature of Scott's books lends itself very well to this format. In fact, for the first time in my life, I find myself preferring to use an on-line version over printed media!

Great book in a great series. I found the multiple choice to be very helpful for my exam, and I think a problem or two was almost verbatim from this book. I recommend using the essays to practice writing your answers, and then have some answer outlines to bring into the exam with you--tailoring it to the fact pattern (that is, if your exam has an essay component; mine had both MC and essay)
