A must for the gemologist library

I love gems. I have a Graduate Gemologist degree (in addition to a physics degree). I do some high-end faceting and purchase gems and rough for faceting, jewelry making and simply for fun. My lab capability is better than that of most jewelry stores.

Schumann's Fourth Edition has been a mainstay of my reference library. I just got his new 5th edition. Outside of an additional chapter on metaphysical attributions of gemstones, it's substantially similar to the previous edition although many updates are interspersed throughout the text and a few mistakes in the previous edition have been corrected. Oddly, the preface inside says "Preface to the 16th edition!"

This has been a valuable and well-organized reference book complementing other materials for gemstone identification. It often has more information than other texts about the stones themselves, but doesn't try to be a specific identification manual, especially on separating natural/synthetic. It has a lot of good information about the various properties of gems, a small amount on mining and a good overview of production methods. The entries for common gemstones are quite complete, but it also covers a very wide range of less common stones and materials that are more recently commercialized. This work should be in the library of any gemologist. It's also simply a good reading book, with interesting information throughout the entire work.

I find the new metaphysical chapter an eye-roller for me. As my daughter says, "gemstones definitely are metaphysical - playing with them makes me happy!" However, there are many, many people in the world that attribute all sorts of esoteric properties to gems, and it is worthwhile for anyone involved with gems to at least be conversant with that point of view, even if you don't agree with it. He gives a non-judgemental overview of some of the beliefs around gemstones, but it's too short to actually provide much background on origins of the beliefs or to document the sources for modern belief systems. Many statements are attributed to "modern literature" or "a recent author" without specifics. It will, however, provide a quick overview. I understand the demand for this chapter, but I feel it is rather shallow and somewhat detracts from the overall book. Whole books can and have been written on metaphysics of gemstones, and it would perhaps have been better to simply have provided some references to other texts.

4th vs 5th!

I bought the fourth "revised and expanded" edition several years ago. Nice book.

Couldn't help but notice that, according to Amazon's info on the two editions, the newer one is nearly 50 pages shorter than the 4th. Has a chapter or something been taken out? I notice that one of the reviews here says that the page numbers are messed up in the newer one, so maybe they actually have the same amount of pages with incorrect page numbers accounting for the difference?! Does anyone know what the differences are between the two editions?

The 4th edition is five years old, so it's probably not all that outdated. Rocks are probably about the same nowadays. :-)

This new edition of Gemstones of the World is excellent. The additional information is comprehensive and makes owning it a plus. I own the earlier edition and was pleased to see the updated text. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about learning Gemology. A special thank you to the Author for taking the time and effort to release this "Gem".

This book was an excellent reference for the 21st Century Job Skills class I had to update and teach. It has a clear and concise description of the four Cs then suggestions for developing curriculum to teach them in K-12. Should I teach the class again (I am an adjunct.), I may require the students to purchase it.

This book covers the basics of TCP/IP as well as many related internet services, how they interact, and how to set them up on different operating system. I keep taking this of the shelf again and again more than a year after I bought it. A must have reference guide for anyone doing a little more TCP/IP than what comes on the ISP's setup disk.

While some of the content is okay, I often felt the information was incomplete. The chapter on LDAP is literally incomprehensible. After trying to read the LDAP chapter I completely gave up on the book and will try to find something better.

my kids don't like it

I was very excited about this book until I tried reading the stories to my kids, 6 and 9. They both hated them and boycotted the book after 2 stories. I read a few of the others on my own and found them to be equally boring.
