Distinguished historians from MIT, Georgetown, Princeton, and other leading universities recount, almost exclusively, George W. Bush's failures, from the poorly planned and falsely fomented war in Iraq to the slow, tragic response to Hurricane Katrina. While none of the writers try for complete remove, they do an admirable job of bolstering their opinions with facts and even occasionally assess a rare success. Kevin M. Kruse, for instance, examines Bush's well-funded fight against AIDS in Africa, but also the collapse of his faith-based charitable programs. In "Minorities, Multiculturalism and the President of George W. Bush," Gary Gerstle shows keen insight into Bush's relationship with Latinos and African-Americans, writing that Bush "proved surprisingly cavalier about the discharge of even basic government duties," words that will no doubt remind readers of the disintegration of the American economy at the end of Bush's second term. Despite its title, this isn't the first assessment of this divisive president, but it may be the most reactionary.

Bush vs. the Scholars

George W. Bush will go down as one of the most consequential presidents in American history. But will his legacy be positive or negative. Many supporters of the former president insist that it may be decades before historians can fully assess the consequences of the decisions Bush made. Most historians would probably agree; events in Iraq, for instance, will have to play out over the longer term before the most objective judgments on the controversial war are possible.
Early drafts will not necessarily be wrong, of course. The Iraq war looks like a catastrophic blunder today, but fifty years from now historians might point to Bush's decision to remove Saddam as a courageous and wise choice that proved to be a catalyst for the transformation of the Middle East towards a more peaceful and democratic direction.
Personally, I am highly doubtful that the Bush administration will be vindicated by posterity. The war was managed too badly, the costs were too high (the number of Iraqis killed numbers in the hundreds of thousands), and the potential benefits still seem like a mirage in the desert. However, historians are right to make disclaimers about the limitations of early drafts of history.
That said, it has been four years since Bush left office and historians do have the tools, skill, and knowledge to begin the job of trying to put the Bush administration in some sort of historical context. Preliminary verdicts may be overruled by future generations, but it also quite possible that the early drafts will be more or less correct. After all, it is quite possible - likely even - that Iraq will not blossom from its current dysfunctional state into a fully functioning democracy and a model state. If Iraq remains near its current state - a corrupt authoritarian regime governing in a sectarian fashion - then the Iraq War will have amounted to a lot of smoke and fury that signified next to nothing.
If the contributors to this volume are correct, then Bush's legacy will be negligible indeed. Why such as assessment? Put simply, one conclusion I gleaned from this book is that time and again the means Bush employed to achieve his ends proved to be self-defeating. For instance, Bush came into office determined to achieve several objectives. These included: concentrating power in the executive branch, eviscerating federal regulations, promoting a carbon-based energy agenda, and exercising America's military might to remake the world in America's image. However, in each of these cases the belligerent means the Bush administration employed to achieve its objective induced a backlash, which ultimately undermined its aims. For example, the Bush administration's anti-regulatory zeal helped precipitate (or at least failed to prevent) the financial crisis. Likewise, the violence unleashed by the invasion of Iraq did much to discredit the American brand in the eyes of the world. Similarly, the administration's executive power grab ultimately led to several stinging rebukes from the Supreme Court.
Bush also came into office determined to achieve a Republican realignment. Those hopes were dashed as support for Bush and the Republicans plummeted along with the financial system in the waning months of the Bush administration. Ultimately, the Bush presidency collapsed like a rickety house of cards. This book does an excellent job of showing how and why the Bush administration failed to achieve virtually all of its professed objectives. The verdict of these scholars is damming, but it is a verdict that is likely to stand up a lot better than any of Bush's prognostications.

AN honest, first-look at a Presidency that will be argued for many years to come.

2000 - 2008 saw much, much change in America. A lot of it by design and, a lot of it by consequence of the attacks on September 11th, 2001.
In the midst of these years George W. Bush was at the helm. For a first Historical assessment, many studious and scholarly voices have contributed to form an impression of the wake left behind. Their contributions are backed up by sourced and peer reviewed documents and, opinion plays little part. The reader is left to make up his/her own mind and accept or ignore the information.
The book can slow to a crawl in places as, for all intents, it is a text book. Having lived through the full term of America's 43rd President, this book for me has added value. I've read many, many books about his Presidency as I, like many others, have a very clear opinion of his affects on America and the world itself.
The common theme flowing through the book and between all the contributors is that, The White House under Bush made decisions on an emotional basis as opposed to strategy and planning. Also, highlighted often, is that the administration, from Day 1, had it's sights on Iraq. Again, this is not opinion, all claims are sourced.
It is hard to comment on a book such as this without letting one's opinions sneak into the debate. I, for one, feel the administration acted disastrously, and I back this up with the low, low ratings Bush had upon his exit. When he climbed off the rubble of the WTC, Mr. Bush was at an astounding %90+ rating and had the country and the the majority of the western world at his feet. His tough rhetoric was exactly what we needed as we stared in horror at the remains of downtown Manhattan.
A large majority of the country nodded its assent as Bush dispatched some 20,000 troops to Afghanistan but many, including myself, winced as he sent 150,000 troops to Iraq; shortly after which he instituted another massive tax cut. 20,000 to where we know Bin Laden is and 150,000 to where we know he isn't? I felt the tax cut was a way to divert people's attention from his [Bush's] foreign policy to their pocket books.
All these actions by Mr. Bush are gone over in the book and, again, all claims are backed up. By the end of the book, many, who view the book for what it is - a narrative, will be swayed somewhat negatively towards Mr. Bush. It's hard not to be given the facts.
Whether the book will stand the test of time is another matter. As a first historical perspective, it's out there and will remain so. Those who lived under Bush will not be and, historically, time has a wonderful way of smoothing things over and offering new theories.
If you enjoy unbiased, recent history, this one is worth a look. Unlike Mr. Bush's "Decision Points" this work offers an unbiased, well sourced, fact filled narrative.

The Presidency of George W> Bush Afirst historical assessment

My 12 year old nephew is a young history buff and I have ordered all of the books on all of the presidents. He has a library in his room. He can tell you any little tidbits about any of t he presidents and he loves all of the presidents. We are now waiting for President Lincoln to be shipped to complete the set of 44.
These books are so educational and great for fact finding. I did not know that one of the presidents was really really short because they all look tall to me. These books are great investment for any age especially the young minds that are interested because they are our future and we want to give them as must information as we can.
