Outdated, inaccurate, politically slanted.

Poorly researched, inaccurate medical information, heavy on political indoctrination. Some street smarts, lots of practical experience, but relies on these so much that it misses actual facts and some important psychological information. There must be better books out there, and if there aren't someone could make a few hundred thousand providing a better one. It would not take much, other than a lot of time.

In McCoy's mythical contemporary romance, Zeus is fickle, full of bluster and none too happy with his under-performing Muses, Kyra, Chloe and Zoe. He sentences the goddesses to toil for a year on Earth inspiring mortals, and decrees (somewhat arbitrarily) that they are not to fall in love, lest they face exile from Mount Olympus. Thus, a romance trilogy is born; unfortunately, this book has little going for it besides its unusual premise. Kyra, charged with inspiring people to believe in good luck, falls in love with professional gambler Jake Lennox despite Zeus's admonition not to forget "the love thing," but the romance is hardly worth getting kicked off the mountain for. Readers are told, rather than shown, that Kyra has a quick wit and a sense of humor, and one is meant to assume Jake is an all-around good guy based on repeated references to his beloved mother. As a result, Kyra and Jake come across as mere ciphers. Even their sex scenes are tepid-a crime against the gods if there ever was one-and McCoy's overblown language ("He...gave a final thrust, taking them over the waterfall where they drowned in each other's arms") doesn't help. Perhaps the fresh, vibrant story hinted at by this book's coy premise will turn up in the next volume.

Great writing but I'm not the audience for this book...

Great writing, but sadly, I'm not part of the audience intended to read this book.

Kyra has to prove herself to be a true Muse of Good Fortune with one of the conditions being that she is not to fall in love with a human...

It's a good premise that promises a lot of high jinx, particularly with the twist that Zeus, Kyra's father, is now a CEO and treats olympus like a fortune 500 company.

That being said, there isn't much interaction between gods and mortals in this story. Few twists and turns that only divine beings can bring. There's a bit but not a lot. Mostly they are used as flavor rather than part of the plot. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but if you're looking for that sort of interplay, you might find this book wanting.

Then there's the sexy parts... I don't think it's a spoiler to say that this book has naughty bits. Unfortunately there's no difference between "normal" everyday naughty bits and goddess level naughty bits. That is to say: they make love like a normal couple. No power induced happenings here. Which is fine for the context of the story, but not fine if you're looking for that sort of thing.

Al in all though, it was a good story. Solid characterizations. They didn't seem 2d while I was reading the story, anyway. Each character served the purpose they were designed for, a definite sign of good writing. The main arcs of the story were interesting. The mystery of the missing funds kept being a mystery till the end. The chance that it could affect the main characters in a negative was was always there. The consequences of the story couldn't have happened any other way, so thats good...

My main gripe though is a spoiler, so skip this paragraph if you don't want to hear about it. I personally hate the idea that a goddess has to loose her power to gain love. It's wrong. It's like saying a writer has to stop writing to be in love, or a sculptor has to stop sculpting, or a mathematician stop doing the thing he/she loves in order to fall for someone. One has to stop doing the thing that is part of one's self, part of one's being, in order to achieve true love. True love should be about 2 people having all of themselves in the relationship. At least that's what I think.

3 stars. Great writing, it does what it needs to to get the story to it's logical conclusion, but i'm just not the audience for this book.

"Almost a Goddess" Entirely Delightful

I read vampire romance. Period. So when a friend insisted I would enjoy this sexy, funny fantasy about Greek gods, demi-goddesses, and Sin City???, I had my doubts. But, after scoffing for a page or two, I had to admit, I was having a great time. I took the book with me everywhere--and stayed up late so I could finish. (Sorry, no spoilers from me!)

It's a math book, but that's where good things I have to say end.

I really wanted to like this book since I value a concise approach, but I think it fails to lay a solid foundation for understanding (at least multivariable) calculus. I'm only familiar with Ch.10-13 because it was required for a calc 3 class. The problem with its approach is that it quickly explains new concepts, making sense only half the time, then launches into examples where it skips important logical steps in problem setup. Stating a problem and then immediately writing the relevant theorem without any discussion doesn't teach "mathematically rigorous" thinking as so many instructors seem to love Stewart for, and it doesn't lay the foundation for creative application of the concepts in physics.

If you have to get this book for a class, sorry. Watching Khan Academy videos was helpful for me, just know that Sal doesn't cover stuff in the same order as the book or most classes, and doesn't give much attention to difficult double/triple integral problems (something this book gets lost in while glossing over some of the concepts).

If you're looking for a self-study book, this is definitely not it because it's hard enough to understand with the help of a professor. Plus the problems are generally uninteresting and avoid challenging the reader with physics applications. There are plenty of resources online for self-studying math so track down one of those for better recommendations.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK FOR THE EXAM!!

Don't waste your money. This book was absolutely no help for the exam. It provides no details on commands used for any of the new technologies and only focuses on the new 2012 R2 material and leaves out all of the 2012 standard features.

So much for the "One Microsoft" policy

I have over 50 IT certifications, acquired over more than a 10 year period. I know Microsoft exams tend to be hard, so I studied extra for this one, having read this Exam-Ref three times before taking the test. My score was in the mid 500s. I am not even going to bother taking the second shot.

Microsoft is doing a disservice to the IT community and to itself. It should be encouraging people to learn and spread its technologies. How in the world is a young person ever going to break into this field and establish credentials? Who said that becoming a recognized system administrator has to be as difficult as getting a PhD?

Microsoft should be focused on making computing easier over time, instead of harder. I actually was looking forward to learn about the power shell commands. Instead, they are used as an excuse to introduce syntax-focused test questions about commands that don't appear in any training materials. This test is about features that administrators don't exercise on a frequent basis - there is no need to memorize heavy syntax, when in practice someone can obtain all this info from a web search when it's needed.

So much for the "One Microsoft" policy - it seems Microsoft Press and the exam preparers are not talking to each other.

The book itself is useful. I wish I could give a rating here not on the book, but on the Microsoft certification management team. They are the ones who deserve 0 stars, for their failure to devise a test that measures what someone learns from the provided training materials.

Besides the introductory page, ALL OTHER PAGES on the Kindle edition are in only italics! Seriously? makes it unpleasant to read. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere that can reverse it but can't seem to find it. All other books are normal.

This Is The Piano Instruction Book You Want

Let's start off with some assumptions:
You have bothered to spend the few weeks it takes to learn how to read music, even if only slowly.
You are mainly interested in playing pop music (rock, country, soul, r&b etc.) as opposed to jazz or classical (not that this book can't help you with the latter as well).
You have noticed that most song books have what are called lead sheets that only have a treble clef melody line with chord letters over the bars of music, and lyrics.
You have gotten far enough with your keyboard playing that you can play some basic chords with your left hand and a melody with your right hand. Which is all that most songbooks show you how to do.

You have realized that on the recordings you listen to professional musicians seldom play a straight out melody with their right hands, and almost never while the vocalist is singing. Any more than guitar players play a melody, but instead play more interesting chord patterns for accompaniment.
This is the book that teaches you to play the way professionals do. In 88 pages no less. To put it as simply as possible, learn how to read music then get this book as the only book you need to learn how to play keyboards. Just as snowplowing is a useless skiing technique once you learn how to turn stop on skis, simply learning to play left hand chords and a right hand melody is nearly as useless a technique for actually accompanying a singer.
I say 'nearly' because there are in fact times when playing the melody line is fitting, but as your only right hand technique is frustrating and being stuck in a rut. This book gets you out of that rut and gives you the tools to strike off on your own with no musical limitations to hold you back. Man am I happy I found it. In retrospect I would gladly have paid $100 or more for this book when I first started.

Excellent book - easy to follow

I played piano for over 40 years but couldn't tell one chord from another, I'd only learned to play from written music. This book explains basic chords, variations, inversions and more in a simple, straight-forward manner that makes using a fake book and improvising a fun challenge. It's also helpful in embellishing my current music. I'd highly recommend it! It's brought new life to playing piano.

Thomas S. Weir is Director of BIM and CAD operations at Brandow & Johnston in Los Angeles. He is co-chairman and founder of the L.A. Revit Users Group, moderates the Autodesk User Group International (AUGI) Revit Structural forum, teaches Revit Structure at Autodesk University, and wrote the first Autodesk Official Training Courseware for Revit Structure. Jamie D. Richardson is an associate and CAD/BIM Manager for Ericksen Roed & Associates in the Twin Cities area. He speaks at Autodesk University, is active in his local Revit User Group, and mentors students at local technical colleges. David J. Harrington, former president and former board member of AUGI, is currently a structural designer for Walter P. Moore. He writes for industry publications, is the technical editor for AUGIWorld magazine, teaches at Autodesk University, and maintains a popular blog (caddhelp.blogspot.com).

Great Book

When I first opened this book the information it leaped off the page. The presentation of the data was well laid out and I notice things like that. The font selection was great and the good use of white space was impressive. Illustrations and screen shots were on just about every page.

The wonderful thing was the joy did not stop there. This book does not disappoint. Scattered throughout the book are "Real World Scenarios". Little vignettes of information that came from the practical minds of the authors. Things that they wanted to share apart from the systematic presentation of the topic. Also mixed in are questions that you should ponder - like "how much should I model?" that encourage you to think beyond the basics.

The book is also filled with step by step exercises. Each starts from a data set that can be downloaded from a companion website listed on page 51 (may be hard to find).

Insider tips and tricks are placed in the book to assist with the problems that you may encounter or to give you options. One that I found refreshing was the trick of using a wall to represent a column. They caution you that this may give the proper appearance but lack the property data you might need.

Each chapter ends with "the Bottom Line". A collection of reminders and questions that recall the content of the chapter and press you on to find new ways to use these tools. Clever idea.

One of the best chapters or sections is on worksharing and worksets. This presentation of the work flow and concepts is one of the best I have seen.

Just when you thought that the book was jammed with just about everything you could think of, there is a multi-page full color section on real projects. If you thought that structural work was all about square boxes, you need to look again. Seeing the bones of a facility in color is fascinating. No longer can you say "Revit can't do that" (well almost). There are small projects and very large projects shown.

Now you know that I am big on standards, so Chapter 17 is of great interest to me. Imagine a whole chapter on standards - GREAT!! Anyway, you can tell it is written by industry experts with many years of background in the trenches of CAD and BIM. Included in this chapter are tips on what to do and not do, how to make small changes that impact the whole team for the good and how to tweak Revit Structure to perform better.

To top it all off the Appendix is an escorted tour of the color gallery I mentioned above. These authors give you a personal guided tour of the projects they have worked on. Zooming in on details and explaining the nuances of the design and how they modeled it. What a value.

All in all, this book is a very valuable addition to your library. I would recommend it to novice and expert alike. The reward of digging into the meat of this book is that your Revit knowledge will expand and your ability to muscle the software into submission will increase.

MAstering Revit Structure 2010

The book appears to be a very thorough introduction to the subject. I am glad I purchased the book, and have read about 110 pages or so. I would recommend this as a good introduction to the Revit program and its capabilities for production of structural engineering designs.
